Ralph..... ....yer the victem of over zellous shadetree mechanic that puckied the headgasket to prevent leaks. Zanes trick of rope in the sparkie hole and crank'em will pop the pucky. And NO the rope ain't gonnna hurt nuttin. You will be adding some french words to your vocabulary as you scrape the remains of the pucky off. There is a reason why headgaskets are NOT PUCKY at the factory. The pucky could be simple alumnium spraypaint, coppercote spray, or permagasket or rtv. You think you need headgasket pucky, just use axle greese. It seals and doesnt stick. Remember to retorque your studnuts 55ft/lbs after 1/2-hr running, while engine is still warm..... ..... Dell

A 1" or 1 1/2" wood chisel, CAREFULLY applied (with the appropriate mallet--2# should do it) around the edges WILL do the job. Make sure of your aim---right at the gasket line, and you should be succesful. Hey, a cheap chisel, $4. - $8. is disposable. Care is a key....don't forget you glasses !! HPH

The other posters have given you good advice.

Because I am not certain whether you are having difficulty removing the nuts from the studs or the head is siezed to the studs, I offer the following advice if you have a stud/nut problem: There is penetrating oil and there is penetrating oil. WD-40 is the least effective that I have used. Kroil is the most effective. Everything else is somewhere in between and quite far from either.

I am having trouble with the head itself. I got the nuts off easy but I think the studs are rusted in the head. I'll keep trying. Thanks,

Stuff some 1/4" rope into the cylinder through the spark plug hole and hit the starter.

No need to put any nuts back on the studs.

Try the front cylinder first then the rear if the front turns loose.

Have you tried cranking it over with the starter, with some of the bolts/nuts in place to catch it when it lets loose?
