Restarting problem

My 8N starts and runs well but won't start for several hours after I shut it down. This happens if I run it for 10 minutes or several hours. It doesn't make any difference if I shut off the gas or leave the shutoff open. Any ideas? Thanks.

You might try a tune up kit. I had similar problems with my 1952(?) 8N. Ran fine until it got hot and would just sputter out and not re-start. Caused some very un-Christian-like thoughts while a very patient helper and I were trying to mow the 20 acre lot where our Church is constructing our first building. Finally completely quit in my driveway a few weeks later. I guessed at a lot of stuff, new plug wires, fuel filter, etc. Finally picked up a $25 tune up kit from Tractor Supply.

I read all the instructions I could find since I'd never done it before, took everything apart, guessed at the timing setting and put all the pieces back together. I thought I'd bump the starter to turn the engine a little bit and see what fell off that I'd forgotten to tighten down. (Hey, I know this is simple for most of y'all, but...) I nearly fell off the tractor when it started with just that tap on the starter switch.

Its been running great with much improved power this fall and winter. One of these days I might even hook up a timing light to set it correctly, but if it ain't broke...

I had the same problem years ago. Took me a time to find it too. Just put new BIG battery cables on and make sure all the coil wiring is in top flight condition. Your spark is week when she gets hot it is even weeker..

I would think if you had a coil issue, your engine would die after 30 minutes of running - or at least require you to give it some choke to enrich the fuel mixture to keep it running. I am going to say it is ignition related. My 1952 8N was like that, I used to have to leave it running because if I shut it off it was a dog to get it started again. I found that if I opened the throttle selector to full throttle and then tried to start it it would usually pop off. If not, I would just end up flooding it and have to wait a few hours until the gas evaporated.

When I was fixing it up to sell it, and trying to track down a annoying intermittent "sput" out of the back of the exhaust, I discovered that if I retarded the timing a bit - it would start MUCH better when it was hot. I wasn't looking to fix that problem, but it was a pleasant find after dealing with my hard starting problem when hot for over a year. Too bad I discovered it right before I sold the tractor :-)

Might want to give it a try.

Good luck,
Dan

I followed Dells advice a couple years ago. And my 6 volt 2n always starts. Copper plug wires, resistor back in circuit to protect coil. HEAVY gauge Battery/starter cables. Rebuilt generator keeps battery charged. Also new ignition switch. I also ran 10 gauge wire to my lights and they are no longer dim.

Hi Rick,

I don"t have a quick and easy answer for you except to make sure your ignition (tune-up) is good order.

If it is any consolation to you, my 49 8N was hard to start when warm/hot for many years. After a rebuild, it starts like a champ every time hot or cold. HTH. Rick

When it won't start, check for spark with a spark tester, or a home-made unit, made from a spare spark plug gapped to 3/16", or so.

Then, check again, after it has cooled down.

Likely, the spark is weak or missing, due to a heat sensitive component, most likely the coil.

Likely, it has enough spark to keep running, but lacks enough spark to start.

While cranking, the voltage to the primary ignition circuit will be WAY less than it is while running, with the charging system working, and the starter NOT drawing current, so the weak ignition system realy shows up.
