OK Guys--found this over the weekend. Been in my friends basement for last 25 yrs. Will replace the 2nd Market grill currently on my "N". My tractor is not "show quality" or "parade ready" and is used for a work tractor but like to keep it nice and as original as possible. Sooo--as long as it is already off and I have some time before we begin to mow this spring, I thought I would try to learn a little bit about restoration??? Looking for your opinions----thanks.

Man did you luck out! That grill is already pretty straight and not dented up. I have restored two original grills so far, and they are a PAIN. Not to discourage you, but getting in between all those bars is time consuming. First, do any body work that is needed, then use a wire wheel on a drill to get the paint off. A wire wheel mounted on a drill is best because it gives you the angle you need to get in between the bars and is about the right thickness. Once it is shiny metal, I like to lightly coat with phosphoric acid to kill any small amount of rust hiding in cracks, but it is not a requirement. If you do use phosphoric acid, lightly sand it with 220 grit sandpaper, then apply a primer. Sand the primer with 300 or finer sandpaper if needed, then apply the paint with either an automotive type air brush sprayer, or I have used rattle cans. One light coat - wait 5 minutes, a second heavier coat - wait 10-15 minutes, then a heavier coat to put a good thick coating on it.

Good luck,
Dan

I get mine at Home Depot (a local home improvement store) and put it in a cheap spray mister bottle. Like I said, it is not a requirement if you can't find it and you get it down to bare metal. I just figure if I am putting all the effort to clean it up, I try to take any effort to kill all rust. One tip, do not get it on too thick, a light wetting is all it takes.

Good luck,
Dan

You are looking at it----I am wondering how/what I need to do to remove the rust (hard to see) and some old paint that is starting to peel off. Do I wire brush, treat with anything before I paint, etc?

Nice looking grill. Does your friend have another one by chance?

Just the "Repro" I traded off my N. Just kidding. My friend has had his tractor for 27 years. An 8N that is used for snow plowing, and mowing his 6 acres of grass. He rigged up his snow plow and braced it in a way he will not be able to use a grill anymore. His N has sat outside in all kinds of weather and has never been covered in the 27 years he has owned it. Starts all the time, no problem! I "blame" this friend for giving me the "N"itis disease and the "fever" that goes along with it.
