I just purchased a nice little Ford tractor, I have other tractors but this is my first Ford. It will not fire,I did clean the rotor and filed the points, I do have fire to the coil but that is it.How can I check the coil?condenser?etc.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks Rick

To check for fire from the coil and through the distributor just pull a plug wire and crank it over with the wire on an old spark plug. You should see spark across the plug electrodes. If it's a front mount distributor you may want to stretch the pigtail that comes out of the bottom of the coil that sits on top of the distributor cap slightly to make sure it's making contact. I'm sure you'll get lots of other suggestions that go into more detail but those are a couple of things to try. Good luck, Lee

Give us a little more info & you will get plenty of help. Front or side distributor, 6v or 12v?

It is a 12 volt front distributor, the tractor was running last year,it has been sitting since till I bought it yesterday.I have fire going to the coil but none at the plugs. My question is how to check the coil and condenesor and points to see were the problem is....or would it be beter to replace them all. Thanks Rick

As of yet I dont believe there is a real way to check the coil, it is sorta it works or it dont,as this is 12 volt is it a 12 volt coil in there , I think it may need some kind of reducing resistor in there as well ??? they always talk about 12 volt conversions, but I never pay too much mind to it as all mine are 6 volt ,,,,,as far as checking the points and setting them you know the easiest way is to take the front mount dist right off the tractor with 2 bolts right, there is only 1 way to put it back in,,,I would pick a new coil,,after you pull the pigtail down,,,, if it still dont start, look at the way the points were put back in, sometimes the wire grounds by the cond,, have a good day pat

the front mount distributors arent very robust on these tractors anyway, so you should keep a spare around, they capture a lot of heat from the radiator.

Coils rarely go bad from lack of use; points do however. Replace the rotor, condenser & points ( gap to .015) Stretch the pig tail on the coil to insure a good contact. Make sure the secondary wire to the top of the coil is firmly attached. Crank the engine w/ the key on & one plug grounded to the block; look for a bright blue spark.
