Another 12 volt charging problem (a little long !)

I know there are lots of posts on 8N 12 VDC charging problems but this has got me stumped.

I changed over to Delco 10SI alternator many years ago and I have not had a charging probem until recently.

It was charging nicely until one day there was no charge indication on the amp meter and the voltmeter was going down.

I have a diode in the #1 terminal on the alternator which is connected to 12 VDC when the ignition is on and the #2 terminal is connected to the BAT terminal on the alternator.

I took the alternator to Auto Zone and they said it was good plus I put another rebuilt alternator on and it still would not charge.

I measured the voltage on the #1 AND #2 terminals and they are 12 VDC with the #1 terminal having a little less voltage due to the diode.

Now the only thing is that I have a 1/2inch belt on and it squels a little when it gets hot. The pulley on the alternator is 1/2 inch so the belt rides a little low on the water pump and crankshaft pulley. Also the belt is not real tight due to the bracket mounting. I plan on getting a 5/8 inch belt the next time I go to the city.

Any thoughts would be appreciated as there are some good people who probably have had similar experiences.

Thanks,

Alex

I am glad I got the good respones. I am ordering a 5/8 inch belt and 5/8 inch pulley and will put them on next week.

I will let you know if this will solve my lack of charging. I hope it is the slipping belt is causing the problem.

It is good to have the good people so helpful here.

Thanks again,

Alex

Alex..... ....I surprized myself this fall when I decided to change my fanbelt to a shorter one, because I'd run outta adjustment on my sidemount 52 8N's l/h genny bracket. The belt was 10yr old and still looked new. I bought the next size shorter and I couldn't gitt it to go over the pulleys. Next time into town, I brought my old good lookin' belt and complained to the parts clerk. He took and hung it up on their belt measuring pulleys and sunnna gunn, IT HAD STRETCHED. He was nice guy and swapped my new too-short belt for a new per-specs belt 5/8x41. Which tightened up the genny brackett.

So I'm sayin', gitta NEW BELT of the correct length.

Remember, ya gotta have a 5/8" belt to fit yer water pump and crankshaft. So CHANGE yer alternator pulley to a 3"? dia x 5/8 groove. instead of 1/2 groove..... .....Dell

Sounds like you need to get your belt tight.
After that you will be able to troubleshoot your system better. You should be getting about 13 1/2
volts with the motor running. HTH

It sure sounds like the alternator is not coming up to speed, due to a slipping belt.
