Hey Dell, glad to see you are 'up'. Silly question. 12v Alt. - 12v coil, where should your 'magic' (can't remember.. .5 Ohms @ 20 watts ???) resistor fit? Before the "Infamous" or after?? HPH, Bob

Bob..... ...use ONLY my secret trick 1/2-ohm current limiting resistor with ONLY the 12-volt squarecan ignition coil used with the 4-nipple frontmount distributor in making a 12-volt conversion. DO NOT USE both the "infamous ballast resistor" AND the secret trick 1/2-ohm 20-watt current limiting resistor make from 2-parallel 1-ohm 10-watt resistors. (Radio Shack p/n 271-131, 2-pack)

I quote RadioShack because most everyone can find one. You can NOT GITT these secret trick resistors from tractor parts stores or automobile parts stores. Just electronics parts stores. Understand? ..... ...Dell, a 12-volt advocate for the right reasons

I have to get this clear in my degraded noodle. Are you saying .. eliminate the the original "infamous" and use only the 'secret' unit? As an aside, Radio Shack no longer exists in Canada, it is now ' The Source', an American firm (I think). AND thanks for your input. HPH

Bao..... ....yes, that is what I am saying. use ONLY my secret trick resistor.

DO NOT USE the "infamous ballast resistor" with the modern 12-volt squarecan ignition coil.

Remember, N-Tractors have 2-types of ignition coils. The squarecan coil on top of the 4-nipple frontmount distributor. And then there is the 1-nipple roundcan ignition coil used with the 5-nipple sidemount distributor. (that NEVER USES the ballast resistor)

And just incase (because you haven't made it clear) Iff'n yer N-Engine uses the 5-nipple sidemount distributor, use a real 12-volt roundcan ignition coil like NAPA IC-14 that NEVER uses a resistor on 12-volts.

Unfortunately, all this talk about resistors confuses even the experieced shadetree mechanic. Best to use real 12-volt designed ignition coils instead of cutting down the 12-volts to operate 6-volt ignition coils..... ....Dell

One of my goals is to someday understand this whole conversation you keep having with everyone. I'm making progress at least -- the other night I found a picture of the "infamous" BALLAST RESISTOR in the Army mechanics manual I got!! I felt like asking for its autograph! :-)

I'm just starting to look at the electrical system stuff now (so I can understand the 3rd-brush generator we have [right? 3rd, not 2-brush on the 8N?]) and WHEW boy!

Anyway, I keep copying these and saving them, and one of these days the light is going to come on and I am going to GET it!

Got it, thanks. One more ?. Is the 'idiot' light required with the Delco Alt. ? There is some kind of through wired item on my dash (looks like a headlight switch..knob broken) that I'm guessing is / was an 'idiot' light.
