The first two bolts on the right side of the hydraulic cover are hollow studs with a rod sticking up. With the first rod "up" the hydraulics work normally, the rod down the hydraulics won't work. The other rod goes up and down but doesn't seem to do anything. Anybody know what these are for and how did they get there?

I can't tell you what the second rod might be for, but the first that will shut the hitch action off is a modification that was occasionally made to run a loader or other accessory from the hydraullic test port on the pump. The rod is attached to a valve that is installed in the pressure tube that runs between the pump and lift cover to supply pressurized oil to the cylinder. When you pull the rod, it closes the valve and blocks off the oil flow to the cylinder and pressurizes the test port. This gives you the same effect as chaining down the lift arms but is obviously more elegant. Were it me, the curiosity would be too much and I'd just have to pull the dipstick cover off the right side and have a peek at where that second rod goes and then report back here - but that's just me! Good luck!

Thanks for the information. The dipstick cover contains two bolts that have a "stud" stick out without any threads and the other one is double nutted. Will these affect anything internally when I try to remove them?

I don't know what's up with that. The dipstick cover should only have six bolts in it. The two that hold the cover only are shorter than the other four which also hold down the parking brake rathet and the running board mount, but they are all bolts. Mayhap the oddball fasteners are retaining some sort of device onto the inside that is connected to the rods you see in the top cover. What about the PTO shifter cover on the left side? All bolts? If so, you may want to pull it off instead and have a look around in there. You will be able to see the backside of the dipstick cover that way and see what if anything is attached.

I wonder if this other mod, the other rod that is, could be for a dearborn live pto.. I think they used a hyd clutch pack to activate it.. was more of an axle clutch if I remember right..

eaither way..Neat.. would love to hear how this turns out.. and see some pics..
