I recently aquired what I think is a 9N Ford tractor. The serial number looks like it starts with "7N". Can this be correct? And if this is correct, do I have a 7N ford tractor or a 9N?

Thank you for your help.

Although never released to the public as such, the 7N existed in the spring and summer of '46, and production was postponed until July '47 as the 8N. Pete (sourced from "Ford Farm Tractors" by Randy Leffingwell)

The 2N had a serial number starting with 9N.

Go to the page linked below, it will give you best way to determine what you have. Keep in mind that parts off the N"s can be swapped easily so lots of people wind up with "half-breeds"

The "7" before the "N" is MOST likely a poorly struck numnber, AND it may be an upside down "b" as there are many "9"s" that really are that. If the 9 got broken the machinest would just use the "b".

Larry

Actually Larry - Ford used an upside down letter "b" for the number "9" and the letter "I" for the number "1" on purpose to help foil bogus serial number stampers plus to identify that this serial number conformed to a new regulation. I have seen pics of the original stamps Ford used and it had the b and I in the set - no 9 or 1 at all. This was done on purpose, not because the correct number was broken.

HTH,
Dan

Frustrated..... ...there are ONLY 2-engine s/n series. Eather 9N or 8N, there was NEVER 2N or 7N. They were weakly hand-stamped by this little ol'man just waitin' to retire (grin).

And surprizingly enuff, there is very few engine serial number specific changes at aren't intuitively obvious; such as the change from 4-nipple frontmount distributor to 5-nipple sidemount distributor.

So gitt out there and squint yer eyeballs and re-read yer engine serial number..... ...respectfully, Dell
