Hello,
OK, here goes. 8N sat since last fall/late summer with hood off, no radiator. I had been running it for a very short time on a coke bottle fule tank.
Rebuilt the generator and did some other electricial things. (It ran fine after that)Now I have replaced the radiator and when starting it will start and run fine only if I hand choke the carb inlet. LOTS of suction! If I have it flooded it will run for 15 secs, then dies. Choke lever won't help. If I hand choke it and release then choke ect it will run for as long as I repeat the cycle.

Found no dirt dobbers in the carb. Since I had ordered a carb kit last year and never needed it, my carb is soaking tonight. Will rebuild the carb tomorrow, but WHY?? It was dry and fine. Can't find any thing very worn in the seats/gaskets.
No debries in the bowl. Did someone mention JEALOUS TRACTOR SYNDROME reciently???

Ditto to the above remarks. Mine regularly has the same problems if it sits to long w/o running and cleaning out the cobwebs. Good luck Pj.

Had the same exact problem a few weeks back. Rebuilt the carb and blew it out THREE times. Drained the gas tank and put fresh in. Put a screen filther in the sediment bowl assy. New fuel strainer at the carb inlet....still wouldn't run without full choke/hand choke. Bought a professionally rebuilt carb. Now it runs like a son-of-a-gun. After some fine inspection discovered that I had overtightened the main nozzle assemble and had managed to crack the carb casting. Didn't think I had cranked it that tight, but the evidence says I did. A VERY EXPENSIVE LESSON!!!

I dont know about a jealous tractor syndrom, but I would rebuild the carb tomorrow.
Check the jets close, sounds like some trash somewhere, got something stopped up. Good Luck with it..... ///CRS///

My 8N sat for a long time and I had the same problem. I soaked the carb and reinstalled it. No change. Took the carb back apart and thoroughly cleaned it. Blew compressed air into the orifices and a bunch of little varnish "worms" wiggled out. No problem after that. Something to check out.

My 8n Ford does the same thing--The trouble with them is that that the choke complete releases when you let go of the choke knob--ain't like a Farmall, is it?

The choke is supposed to release. It is supposed to be an aid to starting a cold engine, not an aid to running. We'll see how my Super A acts when I get into it.
