Pat.. what are your specific questions. My ford 5000 has a 12v lucas genny on it. I got pretty good going around with it and the oem lucas vr it came with.

My 5000 and most of the ford 12v genny systems I'm aware of were neg grnd.. Don't know about lucas.. however.. the genny really don't care as long as you polarize it.. If this is a diesel.. then the diesel don't care either...

Like I said.. if it is like mine.. and most ford 12v gennies post 55.. then it should be B- circuit.

Try polarizing it, and then full fielding it and see what you get.

I can tell you that a 12v b-circuit vreg from any of the 12v hundred series ( diesel ) will work... though they are current limited to 25a.. wheras the lucas genny probably is not happy over 20a.. so watch your loads...

The repalcement lucas vr is about 25$.. it's know to have sticky points.. you might be able to resurect it if it is bad... the hundred series vr are about 40$.. etc.

hello soundguy, well this weekend I finally got my super major out of the barn, I asked a question last week on the fordson forum, you answered, well I got it out this weekend, and took the genny off it only locked up{almost a magnetized lockup, as it spun freely with no load} when I tried to motor test it on the bench,,, ok open it up, I found someone had been in there already and cobbed up the brush wires,, I fix them made new ones,, cleaned all the oil and all out of the genny, {bad leak on tractor,},, bench tested and got it to motor,I am going to put it back on the tractor and wanted to know if it was pos or neg ground,,, It is a diesel super major 5000, when I got it it had 2 DEAD 12 volt batteries wired in series,, positive ground,, {I was looking at my book, which I cant find now and I seem to recall them having 2 6 volts pos, ground,}, so now I find that it is a 12 volt genny, and a 12 volt VR both lucas,,{the VR looks good inside, but time will tell} , I wont be using any lights on here that I can see as of right now, it is going to be my chipping tractor and general chores, I have a tn55 that if I have to do any night work I will use, I just want it to charge the battery/batteries so I can quit having to jump it,, sorry for the long post, hope this all makes sense as i am getting tired,,, thanks pat

Slap it back on neg grnd.. polarize and see where you are at.

If the genny motors.. you are 85% there, as you can get a vr cheap.. or as I said.. use a 'will fit' vr that is a bit more robust. in all likelyhood.. you have the same vr on your sm5000 as my 5000 though I don't have any real data on that to back that up.

If it don't charge after hookup, Full field it and see if that works...

Also.. since you are on 12v.. you can run quite a few lamps on 20a..... that's 240w capability... most 12v tractor lamps are 55w.. thus, 2 front lamps and a rear lamp = 165w.. leaving 75w leftover for charge.. thats 6.x amps.. which is a decent slow charge, even with 3 lamps on.. so you should be good to go.
Go ahead and slap some lamps on that bad boy... though it is older.. it is more of a man than that tn55 by a decent margin... I'm quite happy with my 5000 ( might have wanted a 5600.. but this is fine).. so I know you must like your SM 5000.

good luck

thanks soundguy, I will give that a shot, i like the tractor, actuually it is my 14 yr olds he loves it, I was going to sell it a while ago, he asked to keep it, It has no power steering steers pretty hard so I told him if he could drive it for a few minutes we will keep it, the little bugger drove it around for a 1/2 hr,, : said hows that dad?" You are right thsi is a lot more tractor than the tn55,, The tn55 has a lot of power but is just to light for the HP. Its nice tho with all the toys,n
knowing it will start, power steering, live pto etc .....

My best friend in the 80s had a 60"s Triumph with Lucas electrical. Boy did we have to push start that bike a lot! You could not run long at night because drop cords were only 100 ft long!

Ah, Lucas. In the antique auto enthusiasts parlance--"Lucas, the Prince of Darkeness" !!

Pat..... .....Lucas, Prince of Darkness, is a wry comment on the reliability of Lucas Electrical systems used on English automobiles, tractors, motorcycles, and sportscars.

Altho in the 60's, I was the "head tune-up" in my AirForce Barracks Squadron where I worked on 19 different sportscars for my buddies. MGA's, Triumphs TR3's, Jaguars XK150's, Austin Healy 6's, Buggeye Sprites. I don't remember electrical problems, but boy I got very good with balancing those dual SU carbs. My personal car was a 1956 Dodge D-500 Hemi hardtop coupe with up-rated suspension. I almost bought a Lotus Elite glass slipper, but couldn't find enuff footroom for my pointy-toe cowboyboots.

Ennyways, sorry for the nostalgia, but I really don't know anything about your tractor's Lucas systems..... ....Dell

I understand LUCAS also makes refrigerators, which explains why the British like warm beer!
