Most any of us that have owned an "N" for a while have valuable experiences associated with that "N" and we are most willing and eager to pass our experiences on. In other words, these remedies worked for us. If you have a problem with any part of that "N" from the bumper to the brushhog, ask a question, give us as much information as you possible can about the tractor and the problem and we will help by passing on our experiences to you...But:

We really need a follow-up to let us know if our remedys really helped or not. Many times, I find that I am repeating the same things to the same persons for the same ailments, not knowing if any of the earlier suggested 'cures' were even tried. We know that everything does not work for every person or every "N". "N" tractors, much like motorcycles have been personalized due "Farmerization" of components, broken or burned components, or just plain worn-out components. No two are alike.

Bottom line. If you try one of the remedys that we recommend and if it works or if it doesn't, please post and let us know. That way, if for some reason our suggestion doesn't work, we can go back to the drawing board and see what we did wrong. JMHO...Ron

What do you think? Am I opening a pandora's box here?..... Ron

Makes sense Ron. BTW - what is that big cotter pin looking thing sticking out of the bottom of my tractor? Should I pull it out - it is just dangling there...

The cotter pin dangling under your tractor belly is the the high tech method of keeping the sump drain clear in case of rear seal leak and to alert you of a leak. The pin keeps dirt from clogging drain hole.

Dan, in my experience, it's the umbilical clamp applied at the time they rolled the N off the assembly line and cut the umbilical cord. During the assembly process, a mixture of oil, gasoline, transmission fluid, and beer were supplied to all the tractor's developing systems through a line made of hydraulic hose. When the tractor came off the assembly line, that cord was cut by several old men with sharp fire axes but poor educations. The metal core of the line always frayed as a result, so that fluids drained backward out of the still-wet new tractor if that clamp you see was not worked into the gap. (Of course, you know all that and give your tractor Shiner Bock as well as the other fluids. So it doesn't hurt anything that you didn't know what this clamp is. But others may not provide suitable malted fluids to their tractors, in which case I thought they probably needed to understand the history of this anatomical structure.)

I agree. It would help all of us to know if our particular favorite fix actually worked. Additionaly, it would help all of us a lot if folks asking questions would just tell us the model of the tractor, it it's 6v or 12v, side or front distributor, and what they have done to the tractor lately.

I agree with you. While I don't answer a lot of stuff on this site(I have a TO-30 Ferguson and I do respond in that forum), I think it's a matter of common courtesy when suggested solutions to problem are given, to give a reply about whether they worked or not. When the problem is solved, I believe a follow up report should be given on the solution. It helps everybody when people do this. The sum of ll our knowledge is much greater than outr individual knowledge and this would help our experience "data base". I usually ask people to come back and tell us what they found. About than 10% do.

Nope....you're right on the money. Often some of us are all too quick to post what's worked for us as if it was the only cure..... .....often it isn't, circumstances differ. Some have their stock standard responses.....weak sister ignition switch, it aintcher carb, etc.....not to take away from those types who offer such advice, as I've learned a lot from them too, but sometimes that advice works, sometimes it doesn't. It's very hard to diagnose properly via internet..... .....just like house wiring advice via net..... ..I'm amazed no one's been sued yet for giving bad advice on house wiring..... ....

"I'm amazed no one's been sued yet for giving bad advice on house wiring..... ...."

I would certainly hope that this would never happen since this is a general forum, open to the public for discussion, troubleshooting tips and advice on old Ford tractors. There are many OT type questions asked here and I suppose there has been some advice given that is not exactly kosher. But, to be sued for giving advice here, whether it is good advice or not, would be the epitome of frivolousness.

However, this is a good point and something think about.

Rick
