I changed my friend"s 2N to 12 volts and with a new 6 volt coil and a resistor, it burned the coil up in a couple of hours. I put a new 12 volt coil in with no resistor and it lasted about one hour. Can someone help me with this?

You either need the oem 6v coil, with oem ballast resistor, and the 8ne10306 dropping resistor, -or- one of the new 12v coil, and a half ohm dropping resistor. this half ohm job can be made by purchasing a 2-pack of 1-ohm/10watt power resistors from radio shack then twisting them together in parallel ( piggyback ).. part number is 271-131

The 12v alt will put out 14.7 volts, enough to fry your 12 v coil. You need to put on a "Dell's secret resistor" that will reduce the voltage. Check the archive for the radio shack part number that Dell has so graciously supplied us with. Both my 12 v conversions have been going strong w/out problems, one for 7 yrs. And yes I did the conversions for all the right reasons.

With the 6 volt coil you need two resistors and if you don't use the round 12 volt coil with built in resistor(somebody else can give you the part number) it will burn out fast also. If'n you used a square 12 volt coil I think you need a resistor.
