9Ns/2Ns painted like 8Ns...grrr!

I reckon I'm just in rant mode tonight, and I'm wondering why just about every 9N/2N you see on eBay (and many, many other places) are painted red and grey...even the "restored" ones! I realize that you can paint a tractor pink and purple, but that doesn't mean you can call it restored.

Rant mode off....just wondering what gets into people sometimes and trying to see if anyone gets irked like I do.

Thanks for bearing with me...
Pat

The thing that gets me, is when someone calls a tractor "restored", and it looks absolutely flawless! They use the highest quality paint, with meticulous prep work. Everybody knows you should use crap paint, with no attempt to clean up factory flaws :) Okay, I love a beautifully done tractor of any make, but you gotta admit, "restored" usually means "better than new", and NOT back to "as it left the factory". Same thing applies to collector cars. I"m not disagreeing with using the best materials with the best prep, just pointing out that no one seems to do "back to EXACT original" restorations anyway.

Didn't you ever hear the story about how the red/gray paint scheme originated? Here's the link to a past post explaining why a 2N was found with red and gray paint that looked original.

Thanks Jim. I knew there was a perfectly logical reason for those colors.

In the interest of uniting our fair community, I will post this picture from the archives. It's of a tractor neither gray nor red nor an N, one that should totally evaporate any divisiveness over 9N/2N/8N color and model issues that simply pale in comparison. :-) :-) --Dawn

I like the ones painted the wrong colors, especially pink! The paint still keeps it from rusting, and wrong colors lower the value, making them cheaper for me to buy! If I was going to rant, it would be about people who start hacking away on original sheetmetal or castings. Anyone planning to restore a piece of history would much rather have the previous owner express their need for individuality with paint. I get sick when I see an otherwise perfect grill with a big hole hacked out of it for a loader pump. The dash on my tractor was previously butchered for extra switches and guages. Sheetmetal and castings are a lot harder to fix and more expensive to replace than a little paint.

This would be a whole lot easier if Ford had stuck with one color. Anyway, I think it is up to you what color you want, if you are going to use the tractor as it was intended. I don't agree with calling a tractor "restored" if it is not the correct color. Rebuilt or repainted can apply, but not restored. That being said, I am repainting my rebuilt 9n/8n red and gray, because that is the way I like it, and it will be used in the field, not waxed for a show.

Having been with Ford Tractor in the late 1950's I can assure you that Ford Tractor strongly urged, almost demanded that dealers paint Ford trade in units in the colors of the day. This continued well into the 1970's. A lot of research was done on painting trade in Fords and it was found to be quite profitable for dealers to do so. Don't blame it on clubs and show folks, they likely see it as the wrong thing to do. I say what ever one chooses.

It's mine and I can do whatever I want with it and it is absolutely nobody else's business. If I was doing a trailer queen juist to haul around and look at and be scared to touch then, yes I'd paint it the one color original, ugly, drab gray..

I agree 100% but I don't think that it is 70% of the peoples fault. They get the 8n paint job shoved down there throat by ALL THE FORD CLUBS AND SHOWS. Thanks, Jason Grooms

I know this is not the place to sell your service but I am a self employed machine shop that does from restored Corvette engines to 800 hp small blocks and 1400 hp big blocks, mill and lathe work plus transmission work. I have restored 5 N series tractors on the side in the last 3 years and would like to do more.If you want one done right drop me a line. Thanks, Jason Grooms

I know that I have bashed a few with wrong painted 9N 2N's. So I got a reply that grey 9N's are ugly and I was jealous that I did not have the gall to paint my 9n red. Ok so guys look at my 1939 9N # 2624 that is 98% correct and I feel it is worth $15,000 -$20,000..I think if it were red it would be worth $3500...Tops... What do you guys think. Now I know that each of these tractor belong to people who can do what they want with them, but far to many times some one will ask how or what these 9n 2n's looked new and the get told that it doesn't matter????? ????? ?? you paint it like you want????? ????? ? I believe ther are people like me who REALY care about the 9N history and get tierd of hearing this. Sure if you don't have much to spend or don't care and are just using your tractor as a tool then it doesn't matter but when you attach the word RESTORED the you better be ready for the fallout. Just my opinion.. Thanks, Jason Grooms

sure don`t take much to fire you up, does it..... now what burns me is the guy that got on a tractor for the first time last week and became an instant expert... if you don`t like the color of that tractor on ebay, buy it and paint it the way you like..
as Dell says it`s your tractor paint it any color you want as long as it`s not green and yellow..... ...mike

Just 'cause *I'M* getting old and gray... is NOT the reason I painted my 2N gray... It is because it CAME that way. I like it that way, and will not even paint it red.... even if the 8Ns DO look good! duey

Yea, thats a pet peeve of mine too. I have always thought the 8n looked kind of silly, while the 9/2 looked more "industrial". Besides the 9/2 are the fathers of the line while the 8's are just tweaked up copies. IMHO please don't shoot me for the above comments

Well, if by "industrial" you mean "dull" then I completely agree with you. A correctly restored 8N, on the other hand, has gray sheet metal, cadmium colored wheels, a red belly, and black rad cap & seat - very eye pleasing in my opinion.
But there are lots of N's out there waiting to be restored so you can choose which ever model you like.
It is very comforting to keep seeing new N owners posting here because each one represents another N saved from the scrap pile.
It doesn't bother me at all to see a 9N with a red belly, but some of the way out paint schemes do bother me, like the picture below, of an all pink 8N.

I agree with you there. I like my 9N & have completely restored numerous 2/8N"s. Many people think restoring is putting new paint down, but the is bs in my book. If you tear the tractor down & replace the clutch (if needed), replace all the seals that are leaking, putting new gauges in, make it as good as new. Like we say in pulling, "paint don"t make it run".

Hard to get irked at people that do it when the dealers did it to sell their inventory of 2Ns after the 8Ns came out.
