Are there short blocks or long blocks available for 8n's or do you have to overhaul yourself.

Heres some number from a val----- bilt catalog. New block with head, not rebuilt but NEW $2630.89. Rebuilt short block $1859.99. Sleeve kit $348.89. So you see lobor is a big cost with an engine rebuild. You can figure even with machine shop work you can build an 8N engine for around $1000 if you do it your self less if its still in good shape other then needing TLC

Rebuilts are available for ridiculously $$$$$ more than it will cost you to OH it yourself, if you have a good block to build upon.

Make sure you're comparing apples to apples. My 9N "rebuild" which I'd roughly equate to old's Valu... link rebuilt long block probably cost about the same. Their description describes the block as "reconditioned". That can cover a lot of ground and a lot of money even at the modest rates my shop charges. In fact given I had to buy a new head and block to replace my cracked ones (determined only after the cleaning and magnafluxing) I probably wound up spending more.

And when you get into newer motors I've given up rebuilding. IMHO a quality "remanufactured" modern long block can't be matched price wise do-it-yourself. The economies of scale make it way cheaper for a mass producer than a one-off job IF you do as complete and thorough a job yourself. Heck the time saved alone is worth a few extra bucks.

YMMV,

TOH
