My Ford 9N tractor bears serial number 9N 303 9I3 (which is 913), but I cannot determine
from serial number lists what year it was made. I
think it is a 1940 model, but cannot find any serial numbers in that series.

Can you help explain this dilema?

Thanks for any help.

Thanks to all of you who responded re the SN on my tractor. It seems, much to my surprise, that I have a 1947 2N, not a 1940 9N.

Your assistance is greatly appreciated and has resolved a very puzzling situation.

You have a 1947 2N, one of the last made. Lots of s/n tables claim that production stopped at s/n 298xxx or something like that, but there have been several owners of s/n beyond 300,000 to convince me that no one knows exactly which s/n was the last. I'd be interested to know what date codes your tractor has. Is there a code on the starter bulge? If so it would be a letter followed by some numbers. I'll bet you a dollar the last digit of that code is 7, but what is the rest of the date code?

I'm not positive (of course!) but I think it would be a 1947 2N (even though I know the number says 9N; they did keep saying 9N through the war years and after, up to production of the 8N).

I show 1940 numbers being from 10234 to 45975. That's awfully low compared to your number -- 303913. The 1947 production year started with the number 258504. That was the last year the 2N was made. So I don't know if it went as far as your number in that run or not, but I would guess so.

I hope this helps you get started, at least.

Dawn

According to this site's production numbers and serial numbers, he has the 7783rd tractor built AFTER production stopped!

Woops.

Well... Perhaps someone's arm was jarred while they were stamping in the number?

Sheesh!
