Does anyone have a suggestion on how to clean off the rust from the chrome portions of the hydraulic cylinders. A couple of mine are pretty rusty and result in leaking seals.

How rusty ????? if the chrome is pitted and coming off the only hope is to prolong the inevitable...replacing the rods (also referred to as stems)and resealing. take a fine grit flat sharpening stone and WD40 or the like, gently rub the affected area till all the loose stuff comes off....not shure what type of seals are on these cylinders if they are the old v-type packing you can tighten the end gland to reduce seepage ....if they are modern lip seals the damage is done...replacing the seals with out addressing the rusty rods will be a wasted effort in my opinion....cost to replace rods and re pack should run $150 to $250 each..best thing to do when storing hyd cyls is to pull the pins and retract them all the way.or at least grease them lightly to prevent rust if exposed to the elements

Stay away from steel wool and/or a wire brush. It will leave steel particles on it and the rust will return with a vengeance. Not sure if it would work , but you could try a tub and sink rust remover, that stuff does a number on my tub.

One of the best and easiest ways to remove rust stains from chrome is with wadded up newspaper. Removes rust stains and makes it shine like brand new.

Use crocus cloth to polish and remove the rust from the shafts.
