Have a 41 for 9n, I use it to get round bales for my horses. I use 4x5 round bales aprox 800 pounds on a 3 point hitch bail spear. I have to get them from the farmer down the road, a bout a 2 mile round trip. When I get to the farm the bale spear picks up the bales with no problem, by the time I get home the bale is starting to sag and I usually have to shut off the tractor and come back about 2 hours later and she will pick it right back up again with no problem and I can put it in the paddock. Why is this going on and what can I do

When the fluid is cold it does not leak past the rings on the Lift Piston. After the long drive the tranny fluid get hot and thins out then things start to slip past the piston. You might try flushing the fluid and putting new in and see how much better it works. Mark H.

Sounds like a common problem for 65 year old hydraulics. The 2 mile trip is heating/thinning your fluid and the pump can't keep up to keep that big bale up. Still, pretty impressive to me that it lifts that load at all.
Try chaining the lift arms into position after you get it up cold. You should have been doing this all along to help out the old girl anyway.

HTH jim

Wow same answer at the same time. The chains are a good point to save on the shock to the pump and piston doing the long drive. Mark H.

my 9n in question has a dearborn loader on it, would I wrap a chain from the spear beside me on the seat and to the top cross arms of the buck? I just want to do it safely

That'll work. Best to check the photos here to see how others use their 'limiter' chains. You'll want to use one on each side. DON'T use anything but chain if you tie on there tho. IF you use rope or cable, It WILL stretch and could mess you up bad when it whips by you when it breaks. Tractor safe,

jim
