Success! Pistons out! Now a few questions...

Thanks for the advice/encouragement. I finally got all of the pistons out of my (I think) '52 8N, and now need to order parts. I have the 4 ring type pistons (std) and am wondering if the PR1003 part number is the correct ring set? They cost around $35-40, but I've also seen 4 ring sets that cost around $30. I'll try to link a picture of a piston in hopes someone can tell by looking at it, what rings I need. Mains and rod bearings look VERY good, but I'll replace them anyway. Rod bearings are marked .010 so no problem there. However, I pulled the center main and it doesn't list a size on the back of the shell, only "1057 SB" and a second line that reads "Fm" and a third line that reads "23". Any idea what that means? I'm used to seeing STD,.010, .020 etc. Third question: Where can I get a new bolt for the main crankshat pulley? Mine has the "ears" for the hand crank broken off. I'll try to link to pics of all 3 items, but if it doesn't work, just let me know how to do that, since I didn't see a FAQ for this forum. Thanks again. Can't wait to get parts and start putting things back together.

Alan, the PR-1003 is a ring set for a 4 Ring Piston with 3/16" width oil ring. A 2N-6149-4RS ring set is for a 4 ring piston with a 5/32" width oil ring. You need to figure out what piston you have before you buy rings. From the Pic I would say you have a truck 4 ring piston as the cuts are different. Does it have a O1T number cast in sides? Anyway, if you get the oil ring correct they will work.

Thanks for the swift reply. Hmmm...which ring needs to be measured, the third from the top (which is typically the oil control ring on car pistons) or the 4th ring near the bottom of the piston skirt? The 4th ring appears a bit wider than the 3rd. As for the cast markings, all 4 are marked "1053". I don't see "01T" or any other numbers on them.

Alan, measure the bottom ring or piston ring groove on the piston. If your rings are really sloppy on the pistons now, new ring probably will be also. You really need a new set of rings to check the pistons and install a compression ring in the cylinder off the piston and check the end gap for cylinder wear....Kelly.

Thanks again. I'll make a more precise measurement before ordering rings. Initially, it looks like the rings are snug (of course that may be due to the carbon buildup). I will plan on doing a ring end gap test prior to reassembly. From the looks of the bearings I would guess that this engine was rebuilt in the not too distant past. If the headgasket had been replaced when it happened (over 2 years ago) I would have had an easy job replacing it and wouldn't have had to go into the bottom of the engine at all. Just my luck I bought a tractor that had been sitting for a while. I haven't even gotten to the wiring yet. Wires without a shred of insulation left seem to be standard for these tractors. I'll be working on that while waiting on parts for the engine. I wonder if I'll ever get to the fun stuff, like worrying about what paint to use?

Alan, I don't know what kind of part no. PR-1003 is so can't advise on the rings. The pistons should be marked on the top as to any over bore.
The number on the main bearing is the Federal Mogul part number for that particular journal, not a set number. In the absence of any oversize marking, most likely will be std. size.
For the c/shaft pulley bolt, they can be had from this site, or several others. I used a 5/8
fine thread grade 8 cap screw. Don't remember the exact length. You will also need a flat washer.

Thanks for the reply. The pistons are all marked standard (std). Thanks for the identification of the main bearings. I was hoping the absence of oversize markings on the mains might mean the bearings are std. As for the pulley bolt, I didn't have any luck finding it here. Perhaps it has an unusual name? I really want one that will allow me to use the hand crank.

Your pictures worked great! That's a neat looking piston - I've never seen the kind with 4 rings. I didn't realize the fourth was so low on the skirt. (That's the 4th one, right? Down there?) I fear this is all the feedback I have to offer, though, not knowing much (yet) about pistons. It's looking good, though!! --Dawn

Thanks for the feedback. I've never seen pistons with 4 rings either. It's been years since I overhauled an engine, and I hadn't really planned on doing this one, but stuff happens.

Thanks. I've been reading about Arthur for a while now. Seems to be on his way to becoming one of the best known tractors on the net! Looks like you've found your smoking gun for the engine knock. Now comes the fun part. Like me, you'll be finding the parts you need and putting it all back together. Best of luck. With all of the support you've got here, I'm sure everything will work out great. By the way, I have no idea what kind of camera you are using but in case you didn't know, many have a "macro" setting that is used just for closeups. This would allow you to take sharp pictures of small objects.

Thanks for the idea of a macro setting on the camera! I'll see if I can find one! (I bet you're right!) And thanks for the kind words about Arthur. Thank goodness he seems to be a patient sort. It looks like his recovery will take a little longer than I thought! BUT now he will be really tops when he's all fixed, I hope!!!!
