My '49 front mount has developed an intermittant backfire. I have just started working it for the summer, all I did with it during the winter was to start it occasionally to let her know that I hadn't forgotten about her. Doesn,t seem to matter if she is cold or hot although it does happen more under load than not. I may run 5 min then pop or may go 20 minutes or a couple in a 30 second span. Is this a sign of the condenser going bad?

check your distributor cap,may be carbon tracked.also check condition of sparkplug wires and sparkplug.spark will follow path of least resistance.key is backfire is intermittent and worse when under load, engine temp makes no difference, which usually means spark is leaking somewhere.cylinder press rises under load raising resistance at sparkplug gap causing plug to be harder to fire,so spark jumps somewhere else.might run engine at night and see spark jumping.

remove the distributor, find TDC #1 cylinder, adjust and turn rotor to 1 on cap, while at it, check the gap on your points. If pouints are suspect remove and replace points and condensor. Reinstall...and see what happens. Finding TDC is easy too. Although not absolutely correct by some standards, I take a thin piece of copper electrical wire, and assuming the fan belt is tight, turn the fan by hand (disconnect the battery), and insert the wire into cylinder 1. You should be able to feel the wire slipping upwards through your fingers as the piston nears the top. when the wire maxes out in height, that's TDC or very close. Some roll and push the tractor to turn the engine, but for me, alone this works good enough. these are not high performance engines. Then ensure that rotor is in #1 firing position, ensure wires on cap are in 1-2-4-3 firing order, tighen the dist down, reconnect battery anbd start her up.

I doubt the condensor. Ignition timing may be off. Could be fuel problem too.
