Does anybody know of a source for the steering shaft retainer nuts that hold it in place/set the bearing resistance? My local dealer told me they are 13/16 - 28, but I can"t find them anywhere. Thanks, Rick.

That's the size shown in the parts manual. I don't know where to find one if FNH doesn't have them but I can make one. First unit cost about $34. Second and subsequent unit costs about $.25. I'm only partially kidding - that tap costs $34+ plus shipping. I believe I have the hex stock sufficient for about 100+ units ;-)

I see a new shaft costs $65 from Don B. I don't know if that includes a new nut or if it even uses that thread pitch. The nut is not listed ala carte.

I should be able to single point that on the lathe but without a shaft to gage against I'd be guessing at the fit. Not much room for error on that fine a pitch and I don't have an internal thread mic. I suppose I could try to turn a plug gage in that size - that's cheap and easily mic'ed with a dial caliper....

Hey Hokie. Thanks for the reply. The FNH dealer had no idea where to get them either as their parts computer said to procure locally, but none of the guys there had ever had to replace them. I got a new shaft through the FNH dealer from an after market parts catalog for $90 and it didn"t come with any nuts. I wonder if I could turn it down to 3/4" and re-thread the shaft without ruining the fits for the steering wheel? Then I could use a standard hardware store nut. The original shows two thin jam nuts with a locking tab washer in between the nuts to set the preload on the steering bearings. I would be happy with one thicker nut and a flat washer, then I could just locktite it in place and keep a eye on it for loosening.

That's a real specialty thread. I couldn't find any source for that nut online and MSC doesn't list it - that's a bad sign. If you have the were-with-all to turn it down and rethread just buy the tap and make two (I assume you need two). Way easier and less risky. I checked my 9N and there are indeed two with a locktab washer between them. The flat size is 1-1/16" - my hex stock is 1-1/8" but it looks like there's plenty of clearance. I can make you a couple blanks to thread if you want.
