My 5 ft rotary cutter is on its way to the farm. All 570lb of it. Question is do I need to put some front end weight on the Ford 8N? If so about how much weight?

And what is the classiest way? Fill the front tires, bolt steel blocks to the bumper, wrap the front with chain, weld old bits of long gone tractors to the bumper???

Thanks as always...

I agree with Dell.. your 5xx# mower will be fine on your stock N.. Besides.. you alreday have a 70#? bumper on it? I use my N and a 5' kk with no front weight other than a bumper..

If the rotary cutter is adjusted correctly, you will not need to add limiter chains. The pump is working whenever the PTO is engaged so its really no more strain on the pump. Check the archives for adjusting the rear wheel and top link length, once you get a feel for it you won't need to use chains or add scalp wheels or rollers. Cutters with stump jumper discs do not need to be lifted when going over low cut stumps.

Phil..... ..donnna worry about yer 570# of brushhog. You'll NEVER notice the lighter steering. But you can use some added weight to the front-end iff'n you want-too. I wouldn't fuss with water in front tires. But I would buy some USED weight-lifter round platters at a yard-sale and hang'em from the front bumper.

Howsomevers; you may notice abittta hydraulic strain iff'n yer hydraulics are worn. Don't worry, use some "limiter chains" to hold the weight of the brushhog. ($20, cheap)

Also remember to use an ORC. (over-running coupler)

My hydraulics are excellent, yet I still use limiter chains because it allows me to raise the brushhog over stumps and rocks and resets to my limiter chain set mowing height. Simple, eh?..... ...Dell

I have the ORC, first things safety first etc.

Chains go from mower deck to ? Where do they attach on the tractor, up by the top link?

Thanks.

Phil..... ..yes, that is correct, limiter chains provide a "triangle" between the brushhogg deck lower-link pins and the 3-point toplink under yer butt-buckett. Surprizingly enuff, even the box the limiter chains come in has a picture on how to install them..... ...Dell
