OK, i think that GL-3 is the best oil for the tranny (gives some shear protection without too much to corrode the brass pump). But cannot purchase GL-3 anywhere. Called Exxon, here's my idea, why not mix a batch of GL-1 with a small amount of GL-5 (maybe 5:1 ratio). Exxon says the oils are compatible. Only hard part is knowing how much to mix to get the equivalent protection of a GL-3. Exxon says to check the SAE engineering guides on-line to get the proper mix, but i couldn't find any. Anybody ever try this? thanks.

Try www.bobstheyoilguy.com

Lots of heavy duty oil freaks there, some who "know things".

Nearby old Ford tractor repair shop stocks and sells GL-3 from AutoZone. Mixing two grades will not result in a in between grade either, its the additives that differentiate the fluids. By the way folks, GL-1 was not speced by Ford Tractor for 8N's.

Both castrol and penzoil make a gl4/5 oil that is safe for yellow metal... penzoil is called gearplus

I have never heard of gears wearing out when using the original mineral oil, or from the hydraulic oil CNH new recommends.

I HAVE seen some with broken teeth, from abuse, though.

Why do you feel you need the heavier additive package????

Besides being easier on the gears, i think GL-3 would have some of the traditional smell of gear oil. Would help me determine if the small oil drip from under the clutch & flywheel is due to tranny oil or engine oil.

Why not use GL 4 which is easy enough to get should not cause problems for your yellow metal. Or use GL 5 that meets the military spec for GL 4. Some GL 5 meets specs for GL4 and some does not. The secret is if the miltary says it will work, it will. Good Luck!!

I don't know about all that but I do know if you mix that up in the kitchen sink you'll be posting from a different location when your wife finds out.
