I need to replace the manifold gasket on the 8n
(exhaust leak). The nuts and studs look like they have been around since Eisenhower (rusty). My ? is, how easy is it to snap off the stud? If I do snap off one, what size bolt will replace it? I can"t believe I have to order the gasket from out of town,($1.50 + $5 to $10 handling and shipping) TSC has the manifold but doesn"t carry the gasket,go figure. Does anyone know of any auto gaskets that will work? Thanks for any advice

I have manifold gaskets . E-Mail me if you need them. Gaskets are about $1.00, and shipping should be about $1.00. Everything well under $5.00. Let me know.

That's what i like about this website. sooner or later someone will ask the question you need to know the answer to. all but one of my studs backed out whenever i replaced my manifold on my 8n. was gonna to replace just the gasket but the manifold was rusted out and part of the #4 flange was gone.

TSC in my area sells the gaskets by themselves, AND has them in the manifold box. NH also carries them. I'll bet you napa and car quest can cross them... they have ag application books...

Doggy..... ...yer 7/16-14 manifold stud end is tightened into yer castiron engine block to 55ft/lbs. yer 7/16-20 manifold BRASS-NUTS are tightened to only 27ft/lbs. Brass nuts are used so they will STRIP their threads on purpose. Just chase yer manifold studs fine-thread and use NEW BRASS-NUTS. Always smart to also use hi-temp "anti-sieze" pucky too..... ...Dell

When you replace be sure you do use the brass nuts. Yes sometimes they stick well enough to back the studs out but so what? If your studs should get corroded in or installed to where they won"t back out the brass nuts will strip before the studs break unless there is major corrosion around the studs. In addition if you feel the studs are going to break you can cut thru the brass nuts much easier than you can a steel one.

Have your local auto supply store get a Fel-Pro gasket set on their next stock order. Part # MS8782B, I believe.

You won't likely snap a stud off. They will usually thread out of the block well before the stud will break. The original nuts were brass so that they would not corrode and seize to the stud. The theory is that the soft brass will strip or shear the threads as you remove it. I don't personally buy it. An even 50% of the time the stupid things stick on well enough to back the stud out. Others will scream blasphemy, but I clean the studs up good with a wire wheel and replace the nuts with 7/16" fine thread grade 8 steel nuts and a liberal coating of high temp anti-sieze.
