I need Help!! Having ignition trouble. So far I have replaced the coil, condensor and the insulator in the distributor that connects to the neg. side of the coil. It ran for about 5 minutes. Again, no spark. What I'd like to know is this. This is a 1951 8N and is wired for positive ground. Do I need to reverse the leads to my coil?? Did I just blow my new coil and or condensor. Also, I'd like to know what amount of resistance I should read across the primary and secondary sides of the coil. Thanks.

The coil positive should go to the distributor on a positive ground system. Reversing coil polarity will not keep it from running. Primary of the coil should be 1 - 1.5 ohms on a 6 volt side mount. I forgot what the secondary is, probably 10 - 20K ohms. I usually do not measure the secondary because it is meaningless. The failure mode of coils is usually shorted turns when heated up. The best way to test is to replace with a known good one.

Actually coils can be tested with a "ringing" tester. I use one to test high voltage coils in TVs (as well as ocassionally testing one for a car or tractor). They are fairly expensive and not for use by those not familiar with the technology. Unfortunately,it would probably cost more to have it tested than it would to replace it, even if you could find someone local who could do it for you. Know anyone at a local TV shop???

I had a TV Business in the 60s.... I did not say that it is impossible to test a coil. The ringing test would not find a coil that fails after 30 minutes when it heats up.... This is not a viable means for testing a coil for tractor owners.

It would not be pratical for most folks; however, since my garage and my TV shop are only a few feet apart....If you tested the coil during the "cool down" period you might find a problem with it. I have had a couple like that that showed up bad, then checked good after they cooled down. Replacing them fixed both cars that came to me with suspected fuel/carb. problems. By the way, I really like your website.

Gentlemen: Thank you all for your comments. I must tell you though. I filed the points. Seems that was a mistake!!! Replaced them, now all seems well. Thanks again. Ron
