Keep in mind the basic differences between non- and detergent oil. Non detergent does not have the load carrying capacity of detergent - it is NOT a "heavy duty" oil. Also, non-detergent oil does not carry all the crud produced inside an engine in suspension, thus the crud will not be drained out when you change oil. It is this feature that makes non-detergent so good for air compressors and electric motors. All the dirt and such sinks to the bottom where it stays. Since air compressors and electric motors don't make all that crud, they don't need their oil changed because it doesn't get dirty. Your tractor does make crud, so if you go to 40 wt oil, you might want to consider staying with detergent.

If you have a hot idle oil pressure problem, like less than 5 lbs, 40w is a common band-aid cure in hot weather. Much too heavy, however, for cold weather. I use detergent oil in all my N's.

40w can get pretty stiff in cold weather,I stuck a screwdriver in some 40W to get some to put on a paper gasket and the screwdriver stood up on its own. This was in a cold garage.I have come to the point where I say just keep the oil on the full mark.40 ok in summer 20W in cold weather. My Indian motorcycle called for 50 W.
