Well I think I know why old smokey smokes so bad

Pulled #4 piston out today and then removed the top ring. Slipped it back in the cylinder and it had almost a 1/4 inch gap where the ends of the ring is. Do you think maybe thats why it smoked so bad ?? The rings I'm putting back in are close if not with in specs. I'll almost bet the smoke goes away or at least when I fire it up and walk away from it I'll be able to see it LOL

Sounds just a wee bit off...maybe OK forgovernment work. Wonder if it was made for a smaller bore. If so, it would not have the right "tension" againt the wall. That Could be more important than the gap.

I've been compareing the old rings to the ones I'm putting in and you can really see/tell the differance in to 2 sets.
