12v-6v points question

I have a 2n with a 12v conversion. One weekend I had sparks but the next weekend I went to start it and didn't have any sparks.

My question is since I bought a points set and condenser without thinking (or asking here) does it make any difference if it's a 6v set or a 12v set, or are they the same thing?

I have a Ford shop manual and I'm O.K. with working on it, just need a little help.

I checked the ignition switch, and there's juice through that. I have 12v at the coil, but don't know how to check the coil to see if it's good.

Pointers on that?

Thanks, Joe

Joe..... ...unlike many electrical things, ignition points don't know the difference between 6 or 12 volts. Positive or Negative ground. Ain't that AMAZING? And surprizingly enuff, yer points condenser is good for about 200-volts. So yer worrin'bout nuttin.

you ask..... "Is there any way to test the coil to know it is good?"..... ....yes, with multi-thousand $$$$ lab-grade test equipment. ...or... with my secret calibrated sparkie tester made from enny-old sparkplug.

Bend the side-electrode out for a WHOPPIN' 3/16" gap instead of 0.025". clamp yer sparkie metal shell to enny convient grounding bracket. Plug enny sparkie wire to top of tester. Now try and start yer engine (tranny in neutral, ignition key ON) and WATCH yer calibrated sparkie test-gap. Do the sparkies jump the gap with blue-snot authority? Or are they a wimpy yellowish-orangish poor excuse? ...or... NO SPARKIE at all? Simple, eh?..... ....Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

Points don't know the difference!

You should have no more than four volts at the top of the coil with the points closed. With the points open the voltage will be what ever the battery voltage is.

There should be two resistors in the ignition circuit between the ignition switch and the coil.

Too much voltage is deadly to the ignition coil.

Zane,

Thanks.

4 volts closed, 13.5 volts open.

O.K. I'll get these parts in and let you know what happens.
