My aunt gave me a 1947 8N. After new paint, hoses, fluids, front wheel bearings and steering linkage overhaul it looks and runs great. Will it pick up and run a Rear 72" fail mower that is 830lbs?

Ours will run a five foot flail pretty well in just about all but the tallest thickest grass.

Rick, I have a 6 foot Ford 917 flail and it is way more then the 8n can handle in other then ideal conditions. I use the flail mower regularly on an 860 with no trouble. If you are cutting dense or heavy stuff with the 8n use a bush hog, if you are just looking to mow grass look for a finish mower, up to 6 feet should be ok on your n.

I used a 72" flail on my first 8n. Cut a 3 acre yard with it for several years(grass). Was much happier with a finish mower (60") once I could afford it. When I changed to a hydrostatic Kubota I never looked back. Still have the N though.

Most folks say that the flail mowers require too much horsepower to be effective on our tractors. If you did try it you would probably end up taking partial passes to get the job done.

Most here are using a bush hog style mower (5 feet) or a finish mower (5-6 feet). It depends on what your needs are.

My 8n runs a 7 ft flail mower in weeds but wants to overheat after a half hour of use.

Rick:

It may lift it but it will not have enough power to pull it in anything but very light conditions.
