1949 8N Rear Axle Center Nut Size

A few days ago I asked a question about the rear axle center nut.
Somebody mentioned it was 1 and 7/8 inch in size.
I just measured mine and it was 2 inches across the flats.
So what size socket do I need for this.

How close to that 450 ft-lb number do I have to get.
Getting a socket that big is hard enough.
Getting one to take all that torque, all bets are off.

Got another question about torque.
I understand the principle of torque no problem.
A 5 wrench with 90 pounds on the end of it will make 450 ft-lbs.
That"s simple enough to understand.
But if I torque something like that,
If I was to turn around and try to remove it,
That 5 foot wrench is gonna need a lot more than 90 pounds to get if back off. Why is that.
You can tighten lug nuts to a certain torque
but it always takes more to get them back off. Why.

My Dad asked me how are we gonna even know when we get 450 ft-lbs.
I said get a bathroom scale and set a bottle jack on it.
Make note of the weight of the jack.
Put a 5 foot breaker bar on a socket and start tightening it.
when you get it fairly tight set the scale and bottle
jack under the breaker bar and start jacking.
when the scale reads 90 pounds heavier you then
have 450 ft-lbs of torque. Made sense to me.
But I got fluff for brains so what do I know.

I"m a fairly large guy (an over stuffed teddy bear).
Me standing on the end of a 2 foot breaker bar is good
for better than 600 ft lbs. (No I won"t say how much better.)

I had fun with this too. One day I just discovered that nut was missing from one side, for how long, I don't know.
So yes, the 2" wrench.
What I do is, tighten it as much as I can by hand, then I take a folding metal chair, put the wrench on, stand on the chair, then stand on the end of the wrench, which is about two feet long, and gently rock it, to tighten it. 2 feet times my 215 pounds, is probably close enough.

Once you get it happy, you should probably re-check it from time to time to avoid surprises. A sure sign of it not being tight enough, or of wear inside, is if you see the hydraulic oil leaking out around the nut area.

The "car guys" on the radio came up with a good way to use a bathroom scale to measure footpounds.

Use your five foot breaker bar. While standing on the scale pull down on the end of the breaker bar. When your weight goes down by 90 pounds you're at 450 foot pounds. Neat huh.

All rear axle nuts I have ever seen take a 2" wrench (or socket), but the helper two part squeeze-em nuts may be different. My wife bought me a 2" combination wrench that is about 2' long. I just hang my 185 lb. body off the end of that wrench until it holds me off the ground - I figure that is close. Remember, you need to tighten again after 30 minutes of drive time (do figure 8's) and again every hour after that until it does not tighten any more. It takes a while to fully seat in.

I did not know about the re-tightening.
Thanks for alerting me to that.

The other side has a wire-ry thing on it.
I know that wire has something to do with holding the nut on.
But how does it work.
The nut I need to tighten has holes in it.
Can"t I just stick a piece of wire thru it or something.
Does it work like a castle nut and cotter pin?

I looked up one of them sqeez-um nuts. $22 + shipping.
Hate to spend it if I don"t have to.
I didn"t see any of the regular type nuts.

I found just the ring. 89 cents + shipping.
Mine was broke. Threads are in great shape and so it the nut.
So I just need that locking ring.
A friend dropped off a socket set I can use to torque it down with.
Them"s some BIG sockets and ratchet and breaker bar.

I just called and shipping was at least $5.
I can get it over in Chattanooga for $1.59 and pick it up.
But gas driving over there. Ouch.
Maybe I"ll catch someone headed that way.

Anybody here got that little spring clip they can mail me?
Just drop it an envelope and stamp it.
Any dealers here willing to send me a new one that way.
