Hi All,

I learned something today and thought I would share it with those who are interested.

I noticed my Jubilee project tractor had a dead battery, from what I assumed was lack of use. When I jumped it off the alternator was not charging (per amp meter). The battery was so dead when I removed the jumper cables the engine died. The 12 volt 3 wire GM alternator conversion has worked like a charm since I finished the restoration over a year ago.

At this point I assumed the alternator had gone bad so I took it back to the parts store and had them test it. They said it was good. I had the battery tested and it had a dead cell. The parts store prorated the battery warranty and I got another new 12 volt battery for $2.49. I reinstalled the alternator and put the new battery in and cranked it and it started charging like it did initially.

What I learned was that the 12 volt alternator charging circuit will not excite if the battery is sufficiently dead.

It’s nice to learn something new occasionally. I hope this helps someone else.

Best regards to all,

Rick

Question for Rick.... in reply to Rick H. Ga, 04-17-2006 19:10:51
How you have your "excite" wire to the #1 terminal on the alternator set up... "Idiot Light", resistor, diode, or connected to ignition switch "ACC" terminal?

Hi Bob,

I used the GM side marker idiot light bulb for the excite circuit. I don't recall exactly how it is wired but I did a lot of research on this forum and others and got it right. I know it is right because, as I said, it has worked terrific.

That's interesting! I am trying to figure out what went on there... in most cases, it would have "excited" when you jump-started it, and it would have been trying to push electicity into that bad cell, heating up the battery!

Bob.. At fist i was guessing that he just jumpe dthe starter.. but then.. that wouldn't have powered the ignition. So i guess he jumped battery to battery, thus powering the ignition. I too am suprised that the alt did not excite. Perhaps it was at a very low idle.. like 400 rpm and wasn't quite enough rpm for the alt to make enough charge current to power the ignition and charge that dead-cell-load battery. My guess is that if it had been revved to 900 rpm.. it would have stayed running... unless the dead battery was a super duper low value load... which.. if it was.. I'm suprised the jump worked.. etc.

Oh no Bob I can explain one to you for once. LOL. The battery was so far gone that, when jumped it toook most of the Zap-U tron and didn't let the alternator get enough to start working. Sort of like what happens when you have a dead short, you can beef your way acroos a dead short but only for so long before it kills every thing. The bad battery was almost a daed short but the good battery beefed its way past it just long enough to cause thing to work. Ya I know it doesn't fit ohms law of a lot of the others but, since the last I knew we still aren't sure how ZAP-U-TRONS work we just keep guessing

Well, at least (apparently) he didn't let any smoke out of the system, so it still worked with a new battery!

Yep, you're right....smoke is the most essential part of any electrical system or component. If you let the smoke escape from an electrical component, it will no longer work! ;)

Yep Zap-U-Tron do funny things at times. I've seen thing with them that should work but did. Since science never has figured them out to 100% theres alway those times that sort of kick our buts. I still remeber when I was working an a radio and shorted out a chip and it craked, but it worked good so instead of replaceing it the boos said put the lid on and get it out the door.

Doug, i guess i'm old enough remember that...
i grew up in a house that had 6 rooms and a path..and in the winter time when it was 40 below you didn't waste a lot of time at the end of that path either..... mike
