I desided to investagate why my left brake wasn"t
working yesterday so I cleared a space out in my shop and got to taking off the wheel with the help of my engine hoist. I got down to the brake drum with 6 nuts on the back near the axle housing. it looked like they were the only thing holding the drum on. so I removed them and gave it a yank. nothing, got a hammer and gently taped around the drum. nothing.
Before I get a BIGGER hammer. What is the proper way to take a Brake drum off.I can"t find my manual out in my shop (storage). so any help would be greatly appreciated.

The reason I am tring to get into the brake is, I could hear a spring rattling around on the left side when I drove it, and the brake didn"t work at all. after all your good suggestions it wont budge.I think a shoe is blocking the drum.

OK, Drive the bolts that hold the wheel center to the hub out. Start a nut on each one and use a large punch and hammer to drive them out. Then you can pull the hub and axle to see the problem.

The axle, brake and hub should all come off after removing the bolts holding it to the trumpet. Then the brake assemble will slide right of the axle. You may have to lossen the adjuster then go to the bigger hammer. The drum can be taken off the axle hub by knocking out the bolts that hold the rim on which you need an even bigger hammer for.

If your 9N is like my 2n, after you remove the 6 nuts it should pull off. On my right side, I used a 2x4 and a medium sized hammer. Hit the top, rotate 90, hit the top, rotate 90, etc. Probably rust holding the backing plate to the axle.
HTH...good luck....don t. ...

Did you back the adjuster off to allow the shoes to clear the drum?

You may be way past this, but did you try adjusting it before you tore it apart? The right brake on my 2n wasn't working when I bought it last year. I decided yesterday to try and adjust it. A few turns on the adjuster bolt and it works great.
