Splitting tractor

Ready to split my early ford 8n to replace clutch disk, throw out bearing, and a couple seals depending on what I find.

I need a little guidance as simply as this stuff is.

From what I can see, I need to remove the bolts around the bellhosuing to the clutch and engine.

It also appears two bolts on the battery mount needs to be removed.

It also appears the steering column has four bolts which have to be removed.

The steering column appears to be setting on bellhousing with no other attachment between the two. (or is there mechanical pieces from steering column to the clutch bellhousing?)

What else has to be removed before splitting the tractor?

I think removing the bellhousing bolts, the battery mount bolts, and the steerign column bolts should set up pulling the tractor apart.

Also, I have the front engine section just slightly raised to get the smallest jack under it. Will this cause any problesm with realigning and putting back together?

The way I do it is, remove the hood, front end, of course to remove the front end you need a jack and jack stands. I then use a chain hoist to hold the engine. Then I take out the botls that hold the engine to the bellhouseing and pull it forward and spin it around to get to the clutch. I can pull and engine out and have a new clutch in, in less the 3 hours on a good day.

If you want to remove the bolts from the steering box so you can avoid removing the sheet metal you will have to support the steering box via the steering wheel. I have done them this way as well as removing the sheet metal and front axle. Your choice. When I work alone I disassemble as much as possible so that it's not to heavy for me to muscle around by myself. Re-alignment is not hard, use your trans input shaft to align the new clutch and change the seal on the input shaft while it's apart. Keep the engine level with the trans when you go back together and make sure you have a jack under the engine as well as the trans so you can make the height adjustments on both. Also don't use bolts to "pull" the engine and trans together as you will run the risk of damaging the clutch if it's not aligned correctly. When everything is aligned it will go together as easily as it came apart.

I don't believe the steering column needs to come off. The bell housing stays on the tractor - the block separates from that. Not sure about the battery box on an 8N - ISTR on my 9N it stays as well. Any jacknife misalignment of block/tranny is going to load up the tranny input shaft - bad. Keep them as level as possible. There's a lot of ground clearance for a floor jack - my small jack requires blocks to raise high enough.

I pulled mine apart yesterday. I'm going a bit deeper because I need to replace a broken transmission gear. BUT, to get to the clutch the steering doesn't need to come off. Take off the hood (don't forget the fuel line), wiring to starter, generator and coil, remove the battery box, air cleaner, oil pressure line, choke rod, throttle rod, arms on both side that go to the front end , and the tie rods. Use boards or a jack stand to support below the engine. Use a floor jack (facing front to back) to support the bell housing. Remove the bolts between the engine and bell housing. Roll the tires backward and keep the jack straight and it will separate. Really only takes an hour or so to get apart.
