I have removed everythign and am ready to split my tracto and replace broken/worn parts.

Where should I dosicnnect the steering rods at?

I thought the easiest place is at the steering column. Howevevr, when I removed the back bolt on the top connection, I couldnt pull it off.

There are three bolts on the bottom section which I didnt touch because I didnt know if bearings or soemthign could be inside I didnt want to lose.

Should I remove the connections at the front wheels?

Where is the easiet place to disconnect these?

Once I finish there, I will be ready to look inside.

Pickle fork, then scurry to the bank manager and see if you can get another mortgage for the $2.00 for new rubber seals.

Take two hammers. Hold a large one on side where
the tie rod goes thru. Strike other side about
a dozen times. The tie rod will lift right out.
And right it is tapered. Chuck

Ultradog has the ticket. That's the way I got mine off. Just took a regular hammer and one big whack and they popped right off. Didn't even have to use the BFH.

Well, "rending and masticating" certainly does sound violent! LOL (I think I used the main "big carpenter's hammer" we had when I did it, but I might have resorted to the mallet. I think it's a 3-pound sledge hammer, though I am not positive. And I used my big screwdriver as the "hitting thing" to kind of bounce it off of. Does that sound like the same method? (You never know, I might have invented some crazy way of doing it that has left the tie rods rended and masticated!! LOL)

Only if you use a pickle fork.

goat,
Here's how I do it:
Take the nuts off the tie rod ends on the front steering arms. Put some steel plates, angle iron, 11 hole drawbar, whatever you have to shim from the axle to the bolt that you just took the nut off. Shim it up tight. Then take a bfh and smack the steering arm downward. It'll pop the tie rod right off.
Then I swing them backwards over the rear axle so it's out of the way.
Good luck
Jerry

whenever I take things like that apart I always reassemble them with anti seize coumpound. Makes things come apart easier for the next guy - probably me.

That connection is supposed to seize - that's the reason for that design.

Both ends of the steering linkage are interference taper fits. They require a special tool to seperate. There are work arounds for the tool - search the archives for details. Personally I'd go with the steering column end since they will move out of the way with the motor/axle.

YMMV,
