Folks

Got a 51 8N that needs new Drag Link ends. Ordered what I thought was the proper part. Too short. (see picture) I looked through the archives, and the same issue was discussed back in 2003. Has anyone reproduced the long style drag link ends yet? I'd appreciate knowing if they do!

Thanks!

Ray in Sunny Pennsylvania (1 inch of needed rain on the way...)

I replaced the left side of a 8n with the right side tie rod of a 600.The long tie rod end is no longer made.

Ray..... ....yep, according to the chart in my N-Ford Master Parts Catalog (MPC), the short p/n: NAA-33271-A draglink end is the CORRECT replacement for eather side. You MUST ALSO replace the turnbuckle sleeve (tube) that it screws into. For 8N's after s/n: 216988; use p/n: 8N-3314-D, R/H sleeve, 32.8" long; p/n 8N-33315, L/H sleeve, 34.5" long. ($30, cheap)..... ...HTH, Dell

N.B..... at s/n 216988, Ford changed their 8N's steering gearbox to one with adjustable gearbolts.

Dell, Dan, Murn,

Thanks for the answers. It's a shame the long style ends are no longer made. Perhaps we could talk Carpenter into making them. I took Dell's measurements out to my parts tractor, and sure enough, it had the longer new style turnbuckles. I knocked the ugly off them, and will get it all back together soon.

Don,

That's great news. I'll put a couple sets on order. Although I rob bits off my 'parts tractor', I do want to get it back on it's feet someday.

Ray, my 8n has the same tie rods as your's except it has been sawed off and the short one welded on. Has worked well for 40 years. You can buy a longer tube and change to the later style.
