Rear Axle Seal Replacement Question

Hey again! Well, summer is fast approaching and I'm needing to do some seal replacements to get my tractor in top condition and leak free. I currently have gear oil running down one of my wheels (outside NOT inside?!) and out of the PTO shaft. Here's a list of parts I've assembled from the Smith's page. Any additions/subtractions would be greatly appreciated!

1. A8NN4248A Rear Axle Seal w/ Retainer & Gasket
2. 8N4284 Rear Axle Cork Seal
3. 8N4225 Rear Axle Cork Seal
4. D9NN703BB PTO Oil Seal
5. C5NN747A PTO Shaft Gasket

I've found all of the parts online except the 8N4225 cork seal. Is this different than the 8N4284 seal?

I'm also going to try to fix the leakdown in my hydraulics. I'm either going w/ the direct 3-ring replacement or trying the NAA o-ringed piston. Anyone have any recommendations on this? Also, would I need a new gasket kit in doing this repair (Part # LCRK928)?

As usual, all help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Justin

Thanks for the tips guys! Yea, I'm wanting to get a good idea as to what all needs replaced and do it all at once.

Now that I think about it, my rear axle really didn't leak until I buried my tractor in the back yard a few weeks ago. After getting it out, I noticed the center nut was loose. Maybe I didn't get it tightened properly and should jack it up and re-seat the wheel to see if that helps until I get everything together for the repairs.

Anyone had any experience fixing the hydraulic pump piston?

Thanks again,
Justin

8N4225 is the large seal for the Rear Axle Seal and should come with set A8NN4248A

8N4284 is a much smaller seal the goes over the axle shaft.

I ordered ALL possible parts I might need including brake shoes, springs, felt seal for backing plate, hub, shims, axle nut, gasket sealer, and all seals and gaskets. I replaced everything but the axle. I figured while I have the loaded tires off I'm only going to do this once. Never regretted it.

I highly recommend the merits of ordering parts AFTER you take everything apart and assess needs. My first rear oil seal replacement had me taking the rear end apart three seperate times (ordered new seals and gaskets, took it apart and discovered it needed brakes. Put it back together and ordered brakes. Took it back apart and discovered it needed new bearing and cups, put it back together and order bearings and cups. GRRRR!) It is better to order all the parts at one time and just do the job once. Since you are leaking out the center - you will probably need new hubs as loose hubs cause this. Another recommendation is to go ahead and order 4 or 6 extra shims for the axle bearing pre-load. They are cheap and could make the difference between finishing up or delaying the completion.

Good luck,
Dan
