Anyone tried one of the "Marvel-Schebler design" replacement carbs that are available (seemingly) everywhere (including eBay) for around $120-$170? I have an old carb in need of repairs (no markings on it) but would consider replacing it if the new ones are decent.

Thanks for all of the great advice. I'll come clean and admit that I already put a rebuild kit in this carb several months ago. At the time (just after purchasing the tractor) I thought I could just clean up the carb do a quick tune up with ignition parts etc. and get it running fast. Well, if you've read any of my other posts, you'll know that I ran into an engine rebuild instead and now after many months of sitting idle, I noticed that the choke valve was stuck open. When I attempted to rotate it with the linkage arm that faces the block, the arm broke off of the shaft. I pulled the carb off and looked inside to see that it was a bit rusty looking and that's when I thought about replacing it. However, I think I will try ordering the choke parts first and see where that gets me.

Alan,

I'll post the counterpoint here; I run one of those 'made-in-Taiwan-replacement-carburetors'. Let's call a spade a spade: it's a Chinese knock-off of a Marvel Schebler. Works great, doesn't leak. Cost $99 off eBay. Your milage may vary!

On my Jubilee I have a made-in-USA cast iron MS knockoff that is much less finicky than the rebuilt original one it replaced. It wasn't cheap but it ran perfectly out of the box -- the only thing I note is that it's hard to get it to idle smoothly below about 600rpm, but I'm not one of those how-low-can-you-go idle-
limbo dancers anyway.

I would rebuild the one you have. I printed the instructions from this site and spent 15.00 bucks on a gallon of carb cleaner and a rebuild kit. I had more problems with my wife not liking the smell of the carb cleaner than rebuilding the carb!

Well if you feel you just plain have to replace the carb DON'T buy one of the replacement type carbs but buy a good rebuilt one. This site and or valve built has them. Cost is about the same but the real deal is always the best way to go

I second Bruce's recommendation. These are very simple carbs and a quality rebuild will be as good as new for 1/3 the cost. Not to mention "authentic" if you are a purist. See this message if you haven't already:

I do not recall ever seeing a post here regarding 'high quality after market carbs'. I've seen a few complaints, however. Could be that some are fine & folks don't take the time to let us know. But, if it were my carb.....I'd invest the $30-40 for a kit, get a gallon of carb cleaner, print off the great instructions on the left side of this site under research & info, and rebuild it. Or, if you are not inclined to do that, most rebuild shops will do the job for $75-$90. That's about half of what you would pay for the 'replacement' one.
