I wanted to put a small backhoe (1000 Pounds) on it. He says a 9N doesnt have enough HP. He said
It was to heavy. He said the hydraulics are not strong enough and I would have to add a PTO pump.
Is He right about this stuff?
Thanks,
Adam

I have had a 3point hitch backhoe that I have used for years on my 8N and a 600. HP does not seem to be a factor as it does not load either engine very much. I have not weighed it but I suspect it is on the light side of 1000lb. I have used it on all kinds of projects in all kinds of soil and have never broken it or the tractor by using it. I was told by a dealer that it would ruin the tractor, but it was made specifically for it. You do need a PTO pump.

Dear "N" buddy,

I'm new to tractors. Thankfully, I bought a 9N and caught
the "N" bug (it's terminal!) Should you decide to sell your
newly aquired 9N, you will have no problem finding a buyer
that would love to take possession. By the way Adam, 'ole
buddy, 'ole N'r pal, ..... ..... .....how much are you asking
for it!

Your 9N only lacks three things of making a back hoe tractor: Hydralics, weight, and horsepower.

Yes, some people made a back hoe to fit and yes, digging with a 9N probably beats using a Dakota drag line. Realistically if you have a one time job look at hiring it done or renting a machine. In my country an excavator with a skilled operator can be had for fifty bucks a meter hour if you let him schedule it.

If you think you are going to make groceries this way it won't be long before the 9N is seriously for sale.

Your mileage may vary

Adam..... .. 1) The N-Tractor's cat-1 3-point hitch in good condition can lift about 900# max before the front wheels come off the ground. 2) The N-Tractor DOES NOT really have any external hydraulic power capability.

The internal hydraulic pump is rated at about 2.5 gpm and 1800 psi. Really not enuff for a backhoe. And yes, you can get an external PTO driven hydraulic pump at 10 gpm and 2500 psi, but I don't remember the hp requirements to drive it, but the 9N only has about 23 hp PTO per the University of Nebraska tests.

The N-Tractor has many great features and set the tractor industry on its ear with the now standard 3-point hitch scheme. In its hay-day, there were over 400 different attachments available for it. The other neat thing about the N-Tractor is most parts are readily available and reasonably priced.

The problem is, the N-Tractor is not always the right tool for the job and your neighbor is basically correct. If'n I have a job my 8N can't do, I go rent a machine that can do it well or hire it done by someone that has the right stuff..... ..Dell

I've used one of those 3-point backhoes many times on the back of a John Deere 20-something and it was not fun to drive with that size tractor. You will have to have an externally-mounted PTO pump, for sure. I think the 9N is a little light, and kinda doubt the 3-point will pick up 1000 lbs, unless it's in top-notch shape. You'll have to have some front-end counterweight of some kind.

Not sure about the HP but you will have to mount a PTO driven pump, far as I know. If you get the backhoe mounted and working, let us know.
