Fellas,

Hiya. Been out of town for nearly 1.5 weeks now.
Just getting back. I have a puzzling issue with my 8N. I have been noticing a strange issue with my 1950 8N. When I release the clutch in the neutral position, it makes a LOUD gear HUMMMMM MMMMM ING sound - it is like something is engaging or grinding to a small degree. (tractor doesn't move or orkc or anything - it makes a loud metallic hum noise. It is always present and I cannot determine the cause nor the location of the noise from the tranny/clutch. I recall that when I first bought the tractor it did not seem to make any noise when I shifted into neutral and let out the clutch, now it always makes that loud noise.

Other than that - the tractor works great - no problems with power or movement in any gear. Occasionally, it is a little "stubborn" about going into gear (10% of the time) but I attribute that to the overall age of the machine. Can anyone shed some light on a possible root cause for the grinding noise I hear when releasing the clutch out?

Thanks for your input!

Andy - Hammond, LA

First, don't shoot the messanger.

Second, if it does this with the clutch pedal up, but not with the clutch depressed and if it does it with the PTO in and also out of gear it is likely the front shaft bearing in the transmission.

Cheap fix--ear plugs. Otherwise no way to get there without splitting the tractor.

Your mileage may vary

Andy

Didn't you have have your PTO adaptor, ORC, and shaft go flailing around a couple of weeks back?

Hey guys could this be related?

Jim

Another likely source of the noise is the transmission bearings. Mine started grinding and got louder over time. When I did my rebuild I replaced them and the noise disappeared.

The first thing that comes to mind is the clutch throw out bearing. Is there sufficient freeplay in the clutch pedal or is it "riding" on the fingers of the pressure plate? Is this noise more pronounced as the clutch is being engaged and disengaged?

I agree that it may be the throw out bearing.

Check to see if you have the proper free travel of the clutch pedal. It needs at least one inch of free travel before the throw out bearing engages the pressure plate. If it has no free travel then make some by adjusting the clutch linkage.

You may be able to go for a long time with the throw out beaing making noise before it eats into the pressure plate if you have the correct free travel of the pedal and keep that #12 off the pedal except for when shifting gears or stopping.

Zane,

I don't mean to doubt you, but...

Andy said it makes the noise when he disengages the clutch. If it was the throw-out bearing, wouldn't the noise get worse when clutch is engaged and go away when disengaged (assuming clutch is adjusted correctly)? Also, he said it makes the noise when in neutral, if it is the throw-out bearing, wouldn't it make the noise in all gears?

Just wondering!

Danny
