6V Starting great

I just want to say something positive about the positive ground 6V starter system.

With all the talk about 12V I have been using a 6V ignition system on the 850 for a year plus now. After finally determining some minor problems (after completely removing it to paint the tractor) I'll tellya, the 6V is starting like a champ.

It is now firing up on the first push of the button w/o any problems. And it seems to turn that engine over and have the ability to fire it up aggresively. I am pleasantly surprised and impressed. guess it's true, keeping the connections clean, bright and tight (or something like that) should not pose any problems for the 6V system.

Just thought I would provide a small commentary that 6V does work and in my case seems to be working well.

I may put an electronic ignition in it so I don't have to mess around with points from now on.

I have a 6V system that works great. I may be crazy, but I wouldn't buy a tractor with a 12V conversion. They seem to generate most of the problems here.

I think the slippery slope to 12V conversion goes something like this:

"hmmmmm ....I need a new battery, if 6V is good 8V must be better"

"Hmmm....won't stay charged.....maybe I need anew regulator.....here's one that will fit. I'lll just split the harness here, attacha few alligator clips.....that ought to do it."

"This freakin tractor is making me mad. Now it will only start with a jump from my truck."

" I think I need some new battery cables.....these ones from Wally World ought to be fine. They must be some new kinda metal cuz they are only half as thick as the old ones."

"I'm getting a weak charge. I guess these resistors are the problem. Let's get ridd of these."

"Darn it all....these 6V systems are junk. My buddy Festus says I should change to 12V..."

"I guess we can junk this all this old 6V junk."

"Hey Claus...help!"

All in fun!

Steve W. You forgot to mention how cheap this conversion will be see'n how Festus has got this 71 Dodge pickup out back that charged when he parked it in 83. He also has 100' of lamp cord and some #12 Romex not to mention the slightly used Corvair voltage regulator.

I have a six volt system and am happy with it, but I think the biggest problems with the twelve volt conversions are the lack of any standards, and the problems involved with troubleshooting something that is harder to figure out than the original system. If all conversions were done the same way, I think they would be alot more reliable.

Yep, I've never been convinced that 12V conversion was needed or smart...why spend time and money for something that isn't needed.

6V is the way to go. Never a problem, even in sub-zero weather...less problems than with my cars, all of which are 12 volts!

Count me in too! As I've said before, if the electrical system is clean, tight, adjusted to spec. good parts, etc., they will start without a problem. My 2N starts every time, even in sub-zero weather. It's just a matter of maintaining the electrical system.

Mark me up here too.

Neither of my six volt 8N's missed a start this winter in Montana. If you have some electrical load that isn't original to the tractor maybe twelve volts makes sense.

On the other hand it is a lot easier to maintain the six volt system than figure out what went wrong with the twelve volt conversion and if the posts here are any indication something is bound to go wrong.

Your mileage may vary

Yep. Following Dell's "Clean, Bright and Tight" advice, my 2N started without a hitch all winter long. There were days when it was well below zero out (it is stored outdoors). A quick push of the starter, and it always fired up.

Amen to 6V,

I just wanted to jump in and add my voice to the 6V side. I have sat back and watched 6V vs 12V spark quite a debate. "Henry",(my 48-8N) has never felt better after a generator rebuild and new wiring harness he is charging now. I am positively grounded on the 6V side of this debate. I am estatic about the preformance and there is no truth to the shockingly groundless rumour I was seen leaving TSC onetime with an 8V !!
