I am doing several projects while changing the clutch.

One of the other projects is cleaining the air cleaner.

This 1949 model doesnt have a removable air cleaner does it? I dont see it in the manual?

I assume the way I am going to clean it is in a surfactant hot water bath at a manufactruing plant.

I used it to clean up my carbureator and it did one heck of a job.

Is there any risk of damaging it?

How do you clena this thing?

Mine is in bad shape.

A lot of people will just take the whole thing and soak it over night in a bucket of gas or kero. Then blow it out and wipe it off and put it back on.

Der SCgoatfarmer,

I soaked mine (also a "49 8N w/front mount) overnight to get off the heavy accumulation of grime inside the assembly. With a few grunts you can take the whole assembly out after you disconnect the air tube to the carb.

You will then notice that there are 2 pipes, a large one, composed of the outside housing of the air cleaner, and a small one inside that runs to the air-pipe to the carb. For sure clean the inside one. I have also read that the outside one acts as a "preliminary" cleaner and should be kept free of build-up.

Just opened that thing up.

It is oil soaked.

That cant be right can it?

I see it is one piece but the center looks like and insert with three clips to remove and get to teh filter material.

Looks like brillo pads.

Any thoughts anyone?

Searched the archives.

Understand how it works now.

I just need to clean the outside and the bototm since it is full of trash and then refill with oil.

Let me know of anyother suggestions.

Glad we could be of assistance to you!

Seriously all you have to do is drain the oil out of the oil cup and clean any dirt out that may have settled into the bottom of it, then refill it with fresh oil.

The oil bath air filter works by sucking that oil up into the 'brillo pad' stuff where as the incoming air gets sucked through, any dirt/dust that is in the air gets stcuk in the oil. When you turn the tractor off, all the oil (including the dirt/dust) runs back down into the cup. The dirt settles out into the bottom of the cup. the oil gets sucked back up again next time you start the tractor.

SCgoat farmer, Wow.

I just signed on and it looked like you were talking to yourself...Which I do a lot of as well lately, so my daughter tells me.

Yes the air cleaner is an oil bath and the Brillo is cleanable and reusable.
