How many of you out there are not farmers and have never been but are interested in old tractors? What is your background and how did you get interested? I was an underground miner for almost 40 years until a bad back forced me out. I always thought that those old FORDS were sooo neat. Bought a smokey 2N to help with my place and the love affair began. Never noticed old tractors before, now they are everywhere. I'd love to have one of each.

Not a farmer either, but I am a gear head and like old cars, tractors, etc.
I lurked on the forums for a while and decided
an 8n would be the best toy. Who knew you could have this much fun a 2 miles per hour.
BTW all I have for land is 2/3 of an acre, I am using the N to clear brush and drag logs.
WHen the lot is clear, I hope to restify the N with new paint and a few parts.

Not a farmer either.
Some of my favorite chidhood memories were going to my uncles farm. Better than Disneyland,,, I guess 'cause we only went there 1 or 2 times a year.
Finally moved from the county to the country about 7 years ago. Durn 430 foot long gravel driveyway would wash out with very heavy rains.
One day, 5 years ago,I spotted a cool looking tractor for sale with a brush-hog attached. It was love at first sight. Turned out to be a '52 *N sidemount w/sherman hi/lo,, but I didn't know it at the time, and neither did the seller. I didn't want the brush-hog, but I needed a blade. He had one.
$1800 for the "N", 100 for the blade and he drove it to my 5 acres next day. I just love the old welded up, oily, bent, and beat up thing.
Gave it some TLC, a tune-up and a "big fat american made battery strap",,, 6-volts and starts fine even after sitting all winter. Thanks to the fine people of this board for 'lernin this ex-city-boy all about tractoring.
Especially the safety stuff.

Hi, not a farmer either. I bought an old farmhouse with 13 acres several years ago and realized that my land grew about chest high every year by August. A friend who owns a farm pointed out enough times that I needed a tractor that I realised he was right. I fell in love with my 8N immediatly and each weekend when I escape NYC I think of things it can do while I improve the land. I cut with it move fire wood and built a stone patio last year. The N's are great.

I lived in NYC since 1955. Never a farmer and don't intend on becoming one. However, I have always loved to own a piece of the countryside. I started by buying 52 acres in 1972 near Plattburgh, N.Y. as it was very cheap at $90. an acre. Bought and sold other parcel over the years further South and closer to home. Now I have a 80 acre piece in Herkimer NY, a 4 hour drive from Queens, NY. I have a 1953 Farmall Cub with a sickle mower to cut the weeds aroung the mobile home. I also have 1946 2N in my driveway and still trying to reduce the smoking that it has. I really enjoy being on my land and working on it. But woth today's gas prices it is becoming a bit expensive. I usually like to go up there every month for 3-4 days. But now I think I will have to make fewer trips and stay longer, 5-6 days at a time.

I am not a farmer nor do i pretend to be. I bought an old house with three acres several years ago. About two acres were all overgrown with mutliflora roses and poison ivy. Got a couple of goates to do foilage removal and had a an old craftsman mower for the lawn. The craftsman was just to small for the lawn so I bought an old Case with some implements. The case didn't work out either. So then I got a new troy bilt lawn tractor with a 48" deck and did okay, but it still wasn't enough. I started looking around for something bigger. I looked at ZTR mowers and priced some Yanmars, when a friend told me about his cousins 8N. I took a look at it and did some research. Parts are plentiful and easily obtained and you can do most any repair with a screw driver and a cresent wrench. I bought a brand new 5' finish mower for $1250 from TSC and it does a decent job. Then I found a 6' three reel gang mower for $30 on the side of the road. Now I mow with gang mower and the grass looks great. The goats had done their job, so now I have to mow all three acres. I am planning on putting in a small lake, so I will probably use th 8N for that as well

I was not raised a farmer, but was fortunate enough to buy a piece of an abused farm about 8 years ago. I added to the acreage over the years when my neighbors (3rd generation farmers) sold off. It made me sick to see them go (the farms). I didn't have the $$ to buy the whole farms. Can't fault the farmers when they chunk their farms into little pieces, to max out the value. But I bet their ancestors are turning over in their graves! When I retire in about 9yrs., I plan to live on the farm. I use my N to work on my 20 acres of tree plantings and to haul wood, mow fields, put in small food plots, etc. I let the Amish farmers use about 30 acres of tillable ground each year---the rest of the property is timbered. My education is in Natural Resources, Wildlife Biology--never worked in either field, so this property was a dream come true----makes a great home for the 8N to do some light duty, and for me to do my thing--Tim

Despite my "handle" it's my dream to be "a farmer," not my past. Gardens, yes - I have had gardens, though I've moved so many times in my life that generally by the time I figure out the new soil and growing season I'm leaving again. I grew up in the suburbs, though between ages 6 and 11 it was a 'burb plopped into the middle of vast agricultural fields where I first saw an N and first dreamed of raising fields of corn. My Choctaw ancestors are all farmers so I always joked it's in my blood - but it might not be a joke. But I grew up in what became a metropolitan area and was a graduate student in the sciences (a career in itself!), a free-lance illustrator, a handy-person (weeding, kitchen-painting), a waitress, and finally a professor. And now, at last, at 53 years old, I have a tractor! And when he's all spiffy and whole again, I plan to FARM! (small-scale, but just right for me!) :-)

I am the product of a typical 60's/70's housewife and a meat cutter. Lived in your typical large metro area suburb. Ma & Pa moved to 13 ac. in Arkansas after I moved out. Pa got a '48 8N cuz it was cheaper than a Deere and parts were available. When the wife and I moved outta the burbs, we needed something to help with the chores. Somewhere around June 1998, I became the proud owner of a 1945 2n. At times the "old ford" has been a PITA, but w/this board I've been able to overcome all problems.

I too am amazed at the number of N's, and other old iron, still in use. Last fall, I watched an Allis Chalmers w/a 1 row corn picker. Seemed to work well. Have fun, play safe.... don t. .....

Hi Jeb2n,
Your Granddad would be very proud of his old tractor, what a beauty. You have done a great job, I just my 9N looked anywhere near as good.

My grandfather had a small hobby farm that he tended in the afternoons. He owned about 30 acres but only farmed about 5. The rest was woods. I loved my grandparents very dearly and always looked forward to summer when I could go and spend a couple weeks with them. My granddad would always ride the grandchildren on his lap on the tractor around the yard even before we could walk. I grew up and eventually learned how to work the tractor in the garden doing things like discing, bush-hogging, making rows, and planting a little corn. I loved the dependability of the old tractors and the time I spent on them because that was time with my granddad. He passed away back in 2000 and I had to literally argue my side to keep the tractor. My father accepted it as his portion of the inheritance out of the farm equipment so that I could have it. I began restoration in August 2004 and finished in March 2006. I marvel at the ingenuity and cherish the memories and respect the hard work that these old machines represent.

That would be me. I"m not a farmer at all.
I just couldn"t keep farmer"s hours (up at 5am?).
But I have always wanted a tractor. Tractors are cool.
Then one summer I got a job mowing on Ford3000.
I have wanted one ever since.
Last year our lawn tractor had just about had enough.
So we found a 1949 8N tractor in our price range.
And it was in great shape. I love my little 8N.
I keep the yard mowed and so much more.
Couldn"t do without it now.

I guess you could say that im one of them, I have always loved old tractors as a kid and growing up, now in my late 40's I have an 2N and am in the process of restoring it. I have recently bought some acerage in Twain Harte Calif. and am looking forward to finishing up the restoration and taking my 2N up there to work the land. It will be fun learning, and taking my Grandson along for a ride.

Had had about a dozen tractors, still have 8,a week ago I got an 8N with 4 attachments, what a neat little outfit, they are an awesome little machine, have had some offers already but its not for sale.Kept my interest in tractors as kid on the family farm in the 60"s,still have Dad"s old MH44 too. Since I live near town now we exercise the hobby through a local club and like-minded tractor fans. You are correct after you own one,you notice every other one you see. Dan in Alberta

I worked on farms as a kid back in the 50's. We lived in central NY where you didn't see many Ford tarctors. Mostly AC and Farmalls that I remember. Moved to OK 28 years ago and noticed quite a few Ns being used around here especially for brush hogging. Being a Ford man, they sparked an interest. Spent my life in engineering and management in a manufacturing company. Retired 1/1/2006. Decided 4 years ago I would restore a N in retirement. Found a 1951 8N 3 years ago and I have started the rebuild. My hobby is and has been old cars. We have a 60 Vette, 77 V0ete, 56 Ford full custom and my daily driver is a 64 F100 so the 8N fits in nicely. Don't know what I will do with it when it is finished. I have thought about tractuo pulls although the N's are not that good at it but it would give me something to do with it when I finish it. Really enjoy thisd forum and have printed off many expert directions and keep a file of all the tips.
