Fits & Admiration. ‘49 8N

There is a question about hydraulic linkage fits later on but first the admiration.

Finally got all the hydraulic linkages un-stuck, cleaned up and working. Thanks to Dell & Zane for pointing me under the lift cover. You did forget to mention it was heavy though!

Now that it moves it’s impossible not to admire Mr. Ferguson’s cleverness. Amongst other things I design control systems and I’m sure with a half dozen sensors, a couple of servo actuators, a digital signal processor and some software I could make a 3 point lift. The chances however that someone 59 years later could spend a day with a wrench and a wire brush making it work again seem slim. What a perfect match of simplicity and functionality.

Questions:

Q1 How tight are the fits on the control shaft supposed to be. There is clearly some wear grooves on the shaft. The arm that goes to the hydraulic valves wobbles on the shaft and there is perhaps .0625 movement by the quadrant. My guess is that this linkage can stand a lot of slop but would love to know from the experts.

Q2. When doing final assy (I’m waiting for gaskets) (and answer to above) do you grease all these parts? I wouldn’t think they would get oil from the sump except if you go over a big bump way to fast. Light grease, heavy grease? FO manual is silent.....

Thanks as always.

Phil..... ..re: close fitts and slopps; thats what bearings, bushings, and helm joints are for. Gott enny inn-tharr?

As fer pre-assembly lube; lubriplate and anti-seize would be my choices.

Make certain yer 8N's cam-follower pin is still round, not flatspotted. p/n: 73298-S18, 5/16x7/8 pin (hardened roll pin) Some are recommending using a longer rollpin 5/16x1"..... ...Dell

Maam, I am fine, as far as I know.

I just got a GREEN light to go forward with a new technology, even though it's obsolete.

My assignment is to take a 4th generation into the 21st CENTURY. Since China "bought Euthopia", at least according to BBC (British Broadcasting) I was asked to get a customer from needing "FOSSIL FUEL". I already sent purchase orders for the equipment.

So, when some of us use our N's, it is like memories of our "childhood" for a little.
Just ask JEB2N.

Adios. Respectively, John,PA
