I burned up my 1 wire alternator at the end of last season. So I am taking Bob's advice and changing it to a 2 wire alternator($35 cheap at Napa). Made the wire up with the diode and will be putting it on the tractor when I get a chance, tractor is in Vt. I'm in Ct. I have a question. Made up the wire and put shrink tubing over the wire and the diode is that okay or will it get too hot? Thanks for your advice Bob and everyone. Rick

Bob may post back with an answer, but I have done that very thing several times and seem to get along fine. The wire will only be carrying a curent while you are trying to start it. Once the motor starts there should not any current flow through the diode. The wire will be "HOT" but no amps will be flowing through it to cause it to get hot temperature wise. Like I said I have done that with no problem.

B.Jones,

You're exactly right. The diode carries WAY less than it's rated current capacity before startup, and is actually REVERSE BIASED (carries NO current) AFTER startup.

Heating will NOT be a problem with it well covered up.
