OK now I'm showing how little I know about this stuff.

Do you need to put gasket compound on a Ford 8N lift cover? On the gasket to the hydraulic cylinder?

If I had only taken auto shop :-)

Thanks
Thanks

A couple of drops of oil will help locate the gasket....no harm, no foul.

Phil,

I asked the identical question a few months back, and got the opposite replies. So I used that copper spray on gasket compound. No trouble - no leaks, no runs, no drips. I used it on the hydraulic cylinder as well. One thing I didn't think to do was use bolts as alignment dowels. Where were ya when I needed ya, Georgia Jim!

The hard part was getting the control rod down into the control valve - I was working by myself.

I use it too, in fact I use Copper Coat on each and every N gasket I install and have done a quite few since the mid 1950's. In fact I used Permatex prior to that till the Good Folks at Cummins Diesel pointed me to Copper Coat to seal annoying head leaks on the then new 853ci Diesel engines.

Gaspump: I'm with you on the K&W Copper Coat. It's a great product. I've been using it since the late 60s. Wouldn't put a motor back together without it on the head gaskets. GA Jim

Ya funny way I discovered it. Early 60's We had a fleet of new trucks with the 853 Cummins and had a lot of head gasket leaks, big problem, and we were our own authorized repair dealer. Months went by with Cummins HQ frequently telling us no sealers to be used. Finally they sent a team of mechanics and engineers to cure it. Guess what the team said, you gotta use sealer and out came the Copper-Coat.

Phil: The top cover gasket needs to go on dry. I cut the heads off of 2 bolts & used them as studs to keep the gasket alignedwhen installing the top cover. GA Jim

Clean the surfaces 100%, and then put it together with no sealant. Some gasket sealers, especially silicone rubber, can actually aggravate the problem of these gaskets pushing out around the high pressure part.

You can get into trouble on the pump gasket using sealers. There is a high pressure port on the right side. This gasket can be put in wrong and give you an internal leak.Make sure the control valve is not stuck in its bore before you close things up.
