Just bought a used 6' , right side discharge finishing mower. Mounted it on the tractor and it runs very nice except for one thing. The blades go the wrong direction. I thought maybe they had modified it some way so checked a neighbors older used mower and it runs the same way. What am I missing. I need help! Thanks Roger

I've got one of those old Douglas mowers and it works just fine. I'll look at it tonight and see if I can see any way to set up the belts or whatever that would cause that. Scratching my head, Lee

I am interested to know what you found out when you looked at your mower.

Some PTO's, CUBS, for example, turn the opposite way from standard, and mowers for them have left-hand-thread blade bolts, so the blades don't come undone and fly off, as well as blades made for that rotation.

For safety's sake, you need to check out what your blade mounting setup is, and if it is a single bolt, the blades need to run in the direction that will always be trying to tighten the bolt.

That being said, I have seen some really goofy aftermarket mower drive setups over the years, some with twisted belts. Perhaps that is how your's is supposed to be set up, and you're driving without the twist in the belts, making it turn backwards.

I'm guessing that your real problem is the grass is not being forced the right direction to be discharged. If that is the case can you make a new discharge shoot on the opposite side? Dan

Double check the blade orientation. Someone may have replaced them with the wrong blades.

Is this a belt driven unit? Is it possible a belt has been crossed making it drive backwards? ( some will.. some won't due to having an internal ORC ).

The blade idea is an option too.

It is made by Douglas Manufacturing that was in Canada. There are 2 belts on it. One belt goes from the main drive pulley to the center spindle and then the right side. The other belt goes from the main drive pulley to the center spindle and then to the left side. Maybe because it is made by Douglas Mfg , who is hard to find now, explains a lot. Roger

Making the belts have a 'cross' will effect spindle rotation.. however.. that is not necescarilly the thing to do. Might be swapped blades.. or was made to be driven from a backwards pto.. like a kubota b6100.. etc. Spin the pto shaft backwards by hand to see if there is an ORC built in. If so.. you must drive 1 direction and would then have to swap belts or see if blades are flipped... not many other options... with the info posted so far..

Don't quite understand what you mean. Assuming the sharp or cutting edge not moving in the right direction toward the grass? Are the blades on upside down?

The blades are on right but are turning against the natural flow for the grass clippings. If I could just reverse the power takeoff shaft, or run it in the opposite direction, everything would work right. It is just like the power take off is running in the wrong direction. Thanks Roger

Put the battery in backwards which will run the starter backwards, which will start the motor backwards and put the PTO in gear and put the tractor in reverse and away you go. :-)

Actually, like the Soundguy said it was maybe made for the Kubota, but the odd thing is that the other mower you checked on was also designed for a PTO that turned counter clockwise. How many tractors are there out there that have a reversed PTO?

Do you think I should sit frontwards or backwards on the seat?

Right now I am thinking that my only option is to get a different gear box. Thanks Roger
