Radiator blow-off?

Well, I'm back with another question for you. My 8N has (unfortunately) broken the blow-off tube on the radiator neck so that any blow-off is spewing back over the hood and on me! Being my first tractor, I didn't know how frequently this occurred and thought I'd ask the masses.

I noticed this was happening on a fairly frequent basis and that I got little "puffs of smoke" out of the oil filler cap and decided that maybe my thermostate wasn't working properly. It didn't seem to circlulate the coolant correctly so I removed it until I could get another one. This helped the problem quite a bit, but I'm still getting a lot of blow-off.

Is this normal, or do you think I may have a problem with my water pump? I only fill the radiator up past the core, so it's not overfilled. Let me know what you think!

Thanks,
Justin in Indiana

Buy a meat thermometer and check the top tank temp while engine warms up.Leave you wifes thermometer alone, she wont like it if she finds you are using it antifreeze.Knowing the exact temp helps.A split plastic impellor on a water pump will make an engine overheat fast.Exhaust gas leaking into the cooling system will usually make bubbles in the top tank during warm up.Dont run with out a thermostat.Test it.Put it in a tuna can with water. heat it and note temp that it starts to open.I resolder overflow tubes that have broken loose.

Possible head gasket problem. If the 'blow off' tube is not busted at the neck (ie; there is a stub left) stick a hunk of hose/tubing on it.

My 2N was doing the same thing. Had radiator flushed and as it turned out the head had a crack in it. I replace it with a new head, which solved several problems. I has never run better..... .

Do you have any oil in the water?? If you do your blow off might be a bad head gasket. If you have it filled correctly you shouldn't get much if any blow off from that system unless you have something else causeing it to blow like a head gasket will do

Nope, the water looks clean of any oil. I changed fluid when I repainted it last summer, but it's always done this since I've owned it.

Sounds like you need to get that radiator flushed out. I think I would take it to a radiator shop to do it since you need to get the blow off tube repaired anyway.
