My three old 12V rebuilt alternator is starting to make a grinding noise (I think) like the bearings are going. I did the screw driving test and it sure sounds like the alternator, but I guess it could be water pump (also three years old) or sometime else associated with the alternator i.e. belt, fan, water pump, etc.
Are the bearings replaceable? Any other suggestions will be appriciated. I

I rebuild a lot of alternators for a lot of people so I keep spare parts on hand. Ford, Chrysler (including Jeep), and GM all used the same bearings in their alternators for many years. J.C. Whitney has that bearing kit. I have installed a lot of them. Quality is good. Last ones I bought were about 6 or 7 dollars plus shipping. First make sure what your problem is.

Yep bearing can be replaced and almost any auto parts store will have them, but the cost is almost as much for the parts as it cost to get another one. Also if you have an O'riellys store close to you just spend a little extra and get the life time warrenty one and if it goes bad they give you a new one. Also if you open it up you have to be careful with the brushes as they will pop out and if you don't know how to put it back togeather it can be very hard to do.
