I am trying to install a Ampmeter on my 39' 9n 6 volt system front mount. I have the old one that's mounted on the tractor but not hooked up.

I have a manual but the way my system is now is sorta not the same as what's in the manual.

I do not have a resistor in the electrical system, I do have a blue square box under the dash with (4)-terminals coming out of it (voltage regultor?). One goes to the armature, field, & the third to ground, the fourth is not used.

My question is what wires should be hooked up and from where?

Thank You for any help!

Sorta don't understand! I have been running this tractor the same way without the resistor for over 2-years now. What size resistor do I need, is the size in the manual I have purchased?

alkolano..... ...you buy the correct ballast resistor at yer local N-Ford parts store. (A8NN12250BR; Ceramic Resistor And Mounting Block Assembly (Like Original) 1939-47, $25.00 ...or... p/n: 9N 12250; Resistor Only, 1939-50, $3.00) You DO NOT buy the "infamous ballast resistor" at yer local autopart store.

It is a "speciality device" incomprehensable to electrical neubies that changes resistance value from about 0.4-ohm to about 1.7-ohm, depending upon its internal temperature. It changes with operating time of about 2-minutes to about 1.4-ohms (nominal). It is Ford's tricky way to deal with 1939 "die-eazy" 6-volt batterys and COLD STARTING. That is why I call it "infamous" 'cuz nobody don't understand it.

As I said, it is mounted on backside of dashpanel underneath yer ampmeter that you can't seem to understand eather..... ...respectfully, Dell

alkolano..... ....Sounds like you have a dealer installed 3-wire genny up-grade kit that is the SAME as the early 8N frontmount genny installation. Look it up in the I&T FO-4 manual. ($27, cheap)

WARNING: yer 6-volt squarecan frontmount ignition coil MUST HAVE the "infamous ballast resistor" (mounted on backside of dashpanel, underneath ampmeter) or you will be replacing yer ignition coil every couple of days. Why? Because the coil without the infamous ballast resistor will run TOO-HOTT and melt the insulative tars and you will develope "weak sparkies" and hard starting..... ...Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

Since I have no resistor, I just connect it to the ignition switch?

alkolano..... ....your 6-volt squarecan ignition coil mounted ontop yer 4-nipple distributor MUST HAVE the "infamous ballast resistor" wired into the coil wiring bewteen the ignition switch ON and the coil top terminal. UNDERSTAND????? Otherwize you will melt yer coils insulative tars and suddenly you have weak sparkies, hard starting, ruff-running. You need to use the "infamous ballast resistor" with the 6-volt squarecan ignition coil..... ...respectfully, Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister
