I just bought my first 8N. Actually it's my first tractor period. I got it two days ago and paid $1200. It seems to run pretty good (needs a tune up) and everything works. But last night I wanted to take it for another test drive and all of the sudden it "clanked" and "banged" and stopped moving all together. Pretty sure the rear-end is damaged. Do you all think I got hosed on this or does this stuff just happen?

Congratulations, first buy a shop manual (f04), second spend lots of time in the archive on the left. All repairs have been done hundreds of times and you may as well learn from others mistakes than your own. Also buy an 11/16 wrench, it will take most of the tractor apart. You have just bought a piece of history , not just another tractor, its your reponsibility to fix, restore, utilize and most importantly, enjoy. I was in your (first tractor) shoes six years ago. Now I have two restored tractors, a shelf unit full of rare and spare parts, and go for a tractor ride about 2-3 times a week. If I ever had to sell all I own, the tractors would be the last to go. Welcome to the forum ,it is the AA for the n-series addict. Pete in connecticut

That deal is worth TWICE that around here. The rear end problem isn't as uncommon or hard to fix as you fear either. ALL parts are available new or used. Even here on this site. Welcome to our world. We'll label you 'officially infected' with 'N' fever when you buy your second or third one. AND, yes, you WILL look for and find them. lol

$1200 sounds like a great price for a running 8N. As for your clank, bang, no go situation, it sounds a lot like what other folks here have reported and it usually turns out to be the rivets holding the ring gear to the differential have sheared. Most folks reporting this problem claim they had no warning before it happened so I'd be slow to blame the seller unless I had other evidence that he knew it was a problem before he sold it.

I've not done that repair, but I think I've read that there are bolts now available to replace the original rivets. Pulling the diffy out is not too tough. I just pulled one out of a derelict 9N. Jack the tractor up and pull off the left axle trumpet. Be sure to support the tractor really well.

John Smith shows a differential with ring gear attached for sale for $150. I'd take the same for mine, but I think you can fix your tractor cheaper by just getting the ring gear reattached to the differential.

Welcome to the club.
IN neutral does it run OK.
In neutral and running when you engage
the pto (left side) does the shaft
turn? And lift go up and down?
With chutch depressed can you put it in
any geer? What happens when you let the clutch out?
Try 1 and reverse.
Try jacking rear wheels off ground and try it.
Good luck.

It still shifts fine, it still runs fine, the PTO still turns and the lifts still lift. The only problem is when I put it in gear it doesn't go. It just makes more clanging sounds.

Welcome to the world of N Series tractors!

For $1200 and it runs I think you got a reasonable deal even if it does need some repairs.

This stuff does just happen sometimes (these are 50+ year old machines after all). You will have to determine exactly what it is that went wrong before you will know if the seller hosed you or not though on that aspect of the sale.

Can you start the tractor now? Can you move tranny from one gear to another? What happens now if you let out the clutch? . Give the guys here some better symptoms to diagnose and you will have a lot of help toward getting it fixed.
