How can I test my 12 volt front mount coil besides checking for spark at the points or plugs?

If I recall Dells avise...Notes are at home and my telepathy is rusty.

Using an ohm meter connect the red lead to the bolt that is hooked to the power.
Using the 200 ohm scale, check the resistance on the primary terminal (pigs tail) The reading should be around 1.? ohm for 6v and 5.? for 12v.

The secondary (20k scale & chrome/silver terminal) should read 7.? for both 6 & 12v. The main difference is in the primary side.

This may be close but I don't smoke cigars. HI HI

My most recent 12v coil from my local Ford dealer read at 2.8 ohm Primary and 8.2 ohm for secondary resistance. With the dealer supplied resistor all works well. Good Luck.

One way I know of you will not like. You hold on to it and hook a battery up to it off and on and hold your finger close to the spring on the bottom. That will tell you if its good or bad. But you will only do it once and you have to have both + and - hooked to it. Reason you will not like it is becasue it will lite you up.

Thanks Old, but I was already aware of that method, I thought there might be a less painful way to test it.

sarge..... ...there ain't no cheap shadetree mechanic technical test for enny ignition coil ...except... by spark-gap. I recommend making a sparkie tester outta enny old sparkplug by gently bending the side electrode out for a full 3/16" gap. clamp yer tester metal shell to enny convient metal ground brackett and plugg-inn enny convient sparkie wire. Now crank yer engine over with ignition switch ON and watch yer sparkie tester gap for blue-snott sparkie or wimpy yellowish-orangish or NO sparks. Even iff'n ya haffta buy the parts, $5 (cheap)..... ...Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister
